Travel RN - Telemetry - Progressive Care Unit

American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for a Surgical PCU night shift position requiring ventilator experience and an active VA or compact RN license.

Job Details

• Surgical Progressive Care Unit (PCU) functioning as a stepdown from the General Surgical ICU with bariatric specialty and backup to the trauma unit,
• Night shift, 4x12 hours, 6:45pm-7:15am,
• Typical patient ratio of 1:5 with a staffing goal of 1:4,
• Two beds designated for chronic trach patients requiring ventilator care (non-ICU level),
• Remote telemetry monitoring with tele-sitting support to increase Patient Care Tech coverage,
• Weekend requirement of every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week schedule block,
• One holiday required per 13-week contract,
• Floating required within skillset across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units,
• EPIC charting experience required,

Job Requirements

• Active Virginia State or Compact RN license required; single-state license from a non-compact state may be considered pending,
• Current certifications: ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS,
• Minimum 1 year of RN experience, preferably at a hospital with 250+ beds or a larger facility,
• Strong post-operative patient care experience required,
• Skilled in cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, and emergency response,
• Experience with IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care,
• Ventilator care experience for chronic trach patients required,
• Experience managing cardiac drips (Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, Ketamine) without titration,
• Respiratory support skills including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, CPAP, and BiPAP,
• Experience with isolation precautions and PPE protocols,
• Epic EMR charting experience required,

Additional Information

• Provide comprehensive care to surgical stepdown patients including bariatric and trauma backup cases,
• Utilize equipment such as ortho equipment, chest tubes, surgical drains, trach supplies, endo tools, PICC lines, and MML,
• Participate in Rapid Response and Code team activation as needed,
• Facility may call off up to 1 shift per 2-week period,
• First-time travelers may be considered with strong relevant experience, though prior travel experience is preferred,
• Local candidates accepted, subject to radius-based eligibility and pay rate criteria,
• Candidates residing within 100 miles of the facility are generally not considered local-eligible, with limited exceptions for reduced-rate or single-assignment eligibility,
• Previous employees (per diem or permanent) must have a minimum one-year gap before returning as a traveler,
• Travelers who have worked 365 days on assignment are not eligible to return, with case-by-case exceptions reviewed by facility leadership,
• Facility is a Level I Trauma Center, Magnet-designated, and teaching hospital affiliated with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
