Cosmetology: Contract Instructor-College Credit Closing Date: 8/30/2026 Location: San Diego City College Position Equivalent FTE: 1.0 FTE FLSA Status: Exempt Position Type: Academic Bargaining Unit: AFT/College Faculty Department: School of Business, IT & Cosmetology Pay Information: Step C Class 1 – Class 6 ($6,933.44– $8,849.03) per month based on the current AFT–College Faculty salary schedule. Start Date: January 2027 (beginning of Spring 2027 semester) Position Summary: The role is Assistant Professor of Cosmetology at San Diego City College, an urban campus dedicated to social justice and inclusion. Teaching schedule will vary with class schedule and business needs. The position may include online, day, evening, Saturday, and/or off‑campus classes and may be assigned to any district facility at the Chancellor’s discretion. The Assistant Professor reports to the Dean of the School of Business, Information Technology, Cosmetology, Engineering & Technologies. Desired Qualifications: Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and related classroom strategies. Experience working with diverse faculty, staff, and students. Professional experience in a spa, hair salon, barbershop, nail salon, or related institution offering cosmetology, hair, esthetics, or nail technology services. Valid California Cosmetology/Barbering and/or Esthetician license. Valid California teaching credential. At least three years of relevant teaching or work experience in cosmetology within the last five years. Commitment to staying current in cosmetology and maintaining program excellence. Experience developing college curriculum and using Milady/Cengage learning resources. Experience with shared/participatory governance.li> Experience creating and maintaining professional, community, and industry partnerships. Experience in assessing and placing students in related jobs. Experience creating a conducive learning environment, managing class time, and providing feedback. Proficiency in designing and teaching cosmetology courses in lecture and laboratory, in-person, hybrid, and online modalities. Ability to work collegially with faculty, staff, and administrators. Willingness to participate in departmental and campus activities. Experience supporting students who speak English as a second language and those with prior learning. Knowledge of credit‑for‑prior learning (CPL) and work‑based learning (WBL) strategies. Foreign Degree Requirements: Applicants with foreign degrees must have their coursework evaluated by a professional association that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute (ACEI) and submit the evaluation with the application.
