Medical Assistant Apprentice

Med North Health Center

SUMMARY: The Medical Assistant Apprentice is enrolled in an apprenticeship program that will prepare them to become a Certified Medical Assistant. Apprentices are expected to work full-time in the clinic and log 2000 on-the-job (OTJ) training hours over a 12-month period. All clinical skills are taught hands on under the guidance of a 1:1 coach. Apprentices also complete 200 hours of online didactic training that may include online instruction, educational readings, videos, quizzes, projects and more. The online component is completed typically in the evenings and/or on weekends. PRIMARY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Greets a variety of patients and escorts to the exam room; informs patient of time delays throughout visit.
  • Prepares patients for provider, anticipates needs of provider to maintain efficient patient flow.
  • Performs vital signs and other patient procedures, exams, patient education, etc.
  • Accurately documents all aspects of patient encounters.
  • Perform phlebotomy and laboratory procedures as directed by the provider.
  • Perform and document injections and immunizations.
  • Ensure exam rooms are clean, stocked, and ready for patients.
  • Clean, prepare and sterilize instruments.
  • Obtain prescription refills under the direction and authorization of the provider.
  • Manage internal and external referrals and required documentation.
  • Observe and follow required safety protocols, including handling and disposal of sharps, use of personal protective equipment, exposure to blood borne pathogens, and general safety of employees and patients.
  • Answer telephones, schedule patients, and support care team members.
  • Navigate care throughout the encounter process.
  • Protect patient privacy and always comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: N/A ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES: N/A QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS : The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skills, and/or ability required. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE : High school diploma or equivalent required. Enrollment with a participating Federally Qualified Health Center in the Medical Assistance Apprenticeship Initiative sponsored by the North Carolina Community Health Center Association. REQUIRED SKILLS: Excellent customer service, oral and written communication skills required. Compassion for patients required. Must be able to work well in a team environment. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment, with ability to anticipate future needs. MENTAL ABILITIES: Cognitive reasoning. Clear thinking in high-pressure situations. Ability to prioritize and withstand the pressure of continual work with variable requirements. Ability to concentrate and maintain accuracy despite frequent interruptions. Critical thinking and organization skills, problem solving, and reasoning capabilities. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks, and to work in a fast-paced atmosphere. LANGUAGE SKILLS : Ability to speak English fluently. Spanish speaking or another language is a plus. COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have demonstrated competence in Microsoft Office suite and basic data entry skills. LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS : N/A PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Medical Assistants are required to stand, sit, and be mobile one-third to two-thirds of the time. They are required to use hands to finger, handle or feel over two-thirds of the time, as well as reach with hands and arms. Climbing or balancing occurs less than one-third of the time, while stooping, kneeling, or crouching occurs between one-third and two-thirds of the day. Communicating by talking / hearing occurs over two-thirds of the day. The amount of time spent lifting or exerting force is about 50% for up to 10 pounds and less than one-third of the time up to 25 pounds. Rarely is there a need to lift more than 26 pounds. This position requires:
  • Periods of sitting, reading and documentation are required.
  • Periods of moderate activity are required.
  • Some lifting, bending, stooping, and moving is required.
  • Intact sight and hearing with or without assistive devices are required.
  • Frequent walking for short distances.
  • Repetitive motion and work with keyboards.
  • Personal vehicle travel to provider office, offsite meetings.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions for this job. MedNorth Health Center provides comprehensive health care services, inside a multi-cultural medical/dental clinic, to all individuals; insured, uninsured, and underinsured. The building is heated in winter and air conditioned in the summer with noise levels of moderate to loud. We serve patients who speak multiple languages and who may need the assistance of an interpreter. In this position one may be subject to exposure to copier toner, correction fluid, bright fluorescent lighting, and continuous personal computer exposure.
