Compliance Officer

As the Compliance Officer, you will serve as the Alaska SBDC’s functional lead and principal internal resource for grant, program, fiscal, and regulatory compliance across its SSBCI Technical Assistance programs and other assigned sponsored activities. You will support compliance and reporting requirements across federal, state, university, and other funding sources exceeding $165 million, interpreting and applying applicable laws, regulations, award terms and conditions, sponsor guidance, university policies, and program requirements, including Uniform Guidance under 2 CFR 200 and U.S. Department of the Treasury SSBCI and Small Business Administration requirements.

You will independently evaluate programmatic, administrative, fiscal, procurement, contractual, and reporting activities to determine compliance with approved scopes of work, budgets, cost principles, documentation standards, sponsor expectations, and applicable requirements. You will lead a risk-based compliance monitoring program; conduct periodic reviews; identify control weaknesses, documentation gaps, potential questioned costs, and reporting concerns; assess organizational and financial risk; and develop, implement, and track corrective actions and preventive measures.

The Compliance Officer will advise Alaska SBDC and UAA Office of Research leadership, program managers, fiscal and project management staff, and other employees on regulatory interpretation, compliance obligations, internal controls, risk mitigation, and corrective action. You will develop and maintain procedures, checklists, monitoring tools, training resources, and other guidance that promote consistent and effective compliance practices. You will coordinate closely with the Data Systems Manager, who serves as the front-line functional resource for data quality and reporting readiness, while independently evaluating the broader regulatory, fiscal, programmatic, and documentation implications of reported activity.

You will serve as the Department's primary compliance liaison with Sponsored Programs, Finance, Procurement, Human Resources, Risk, and other university offices, as well as sponsors, auditors, and monitoring entities. You will lead preparation for audits, sponsor monitoring, desk reviews, program reviews, and other compliance examinations; coordinate information requests; validate supporting documentation; review programmatic and fiscal reports; analyze findings; and lead the development and implementation of corrective-action responses. You will provide functional leadership and day-to-day technical direction to employees whose work affects program compliance and lead cross-functional initiatives that strengthen internal controls, improve operational consistency, reduce organizational risk, and promote program integrity.

The position requires independent judgment in interpreting complex requirements, assessing compliance and risk, resolving issues, and determining when matters require escalation to appropriate university leadership or compliance offices. The SSBCI Compliance Officer will maintain current knowledge of applicable regulatory and sponsor requirements and translate changes into practical operational, documentation, reporting, training, and internal-control improvements across Alaska SBDC programs.

To Thrive in this role, the candidate should bring a strong combination of grant and program compliance, fiscal oversight, internal controls, audit preparation, and sponsored-project administration experience. Their knowledge of 2 CFR Part 200, federal cost principles, award terms and conditions, sponsor requirements, and university policies will enable them to interpret complex requirements, evaluate cost allowability, identify compliance risks, and develop practical, defensible recommendations. Experience conducting compliance reviews, monitoring federally and state-funded programs, assessing internal controls, reviewing supporting documentation, preparing financial and programmatic reports, and developing corrective-action plans will position the candidate to effectively identify and resolve potential findings while strengthening program operations. In addition, their ability to lead cross-functional teams, provide technical guidance and training, communicate complex regulatory requirements to diverse audiences, and advise management on fiscal, programmatic, and operational risks will support effective collaboration across departments and with sponsors, auditors, and external partners. Strong analytical, organizational, written, and problem-solving skills, combined with proficiency in financial and reporting systems, spreadsheets, electronic records, and other compliance tools, will further enable the candidate to manage competing priorities, maintain accurate documentation, meet recurring reporting and closeout deadlines, and promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in related field and five years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Master’s degree preferred.

This position is located at the Bragaw Office Complex in Anchorage, Alaska. This is a term-funded, full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package .
