Position Overview

The Inpatient Gastroenterology Consult Nurse Practitioner (NP) plays a vital role within a dynamic inpatient gastroenterology consult service, providing care for pediatric patients with diverse gastrointestinal, nutritional, feeding, and enteral access requirements. Collaborating closely with gastroenterology faculty, fellows, residents, medical students, nurses, dietitians, and other members of the multidisciplinary team, the NP assesses and manages hospitalized children throughout the organization. This consult service offers exposure to a wide array of pediatric gastroenterology cases, allowing for the development of clinical skills alongside seasoned professionals and trainees. Responsibilities include participating in daily rounds, creating and executing evidence-based care plans, coordinating diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and facilitating safe transitions of care. Additional opportunities encompass teaching, quality improvement initiatives, clinical program development, and scholarly activities. • Oversee and manage patients on the GI consult service, including assessment, diagnostic evaluation, treatment planning, ongoing management, and discharge coordination in partnership with supervising physicians.
• Assess hospitalized children facing gastrointestinal and nutritional challenges, such as feeding difficulties, gastroesophageal reflux, constipation, diarrhea, malnutrition, hepatobiliary disorders, enteral access needs, and evaluations for surgical feeding tube placement.
• Engage in daily multidisciplinary rounds on the GI consult service.
• Work collaboratively with primary inpatient teams and consultants to ensure timely, thoughtful, and family-centered GI care.
• Act as a clinical resource for nursing staff, trainees, and other healthcare professionals.
• Contribute to the education of residents, fellows, medical students, nurses, patients, and families regarding GI conditions, enteral nutrition, and feeding tube management.
• Participate in the development and assessment of departmental standards, policies, and procedures that promote high-quality, cost-effective care.
• Engage in evidence-based practice, research, publications, presentations, and other scholarly or programmatic initiatives within the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, based on interest and experience.
• Collaborate and adapt flexibly with the inpatient GI team, responding to changing patient volumes, clinical priorities, and service needs while ensuring continuity of care.

• 40 hours per week, with 10-hour day shifts from 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM (with flexibility for 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM).
• Weekend coverage required approximately every three weekends.

• Master of Science in Nursing is mandatory.

• Demonstrated interest in inpatient pediatric care, collaborative practice, and working within a multidisciplinary academic medical environment.
• Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork abilities.
• Capability to excel in a fast-paced clinical setting, manage competing priorities, and adapt to the needs of patients and the team.
• New graduate Nurse Practitioners with substantial prior inpatient pediatric RN experience are encouraged to apply.

• Current Nurse Practitioner license in Massachusetts (PNP or FNP) is required.
