Commercial HVAC Service Technician – Controls & Advanced Systems

Denver, CO | Full-Time

$25–$40/hr DOE

WMS Mechanical Solutions is seeking an experienced Commercial HVAC Service Technician to join our growing team. This is not a residential or light commercial service position. Our technicians work on sophisticated commercial HVAC systems, including controls, BAS integrations, VFDs, chillers, heat recovery equipment, and semi-custom air handling systems across a wide variety of facilities.

What You'll Work On

Controls & BAS Systems

• Manufacturer-configured controls
• JENEsys / Niagara-based systems
• BAS integration and troubleshooting
• Coordination with controls contractors

VFDs & Modulating Equipment

• Yaskawa
• ABB
• Mitsubishi
• Allen-Bradley
• Danfoss
• Grundfos

Commercial HVAC Equipment

• Air handling units (3–200 tons)
• Heat recovery systems
• MAUs, DOAS, and VAV systems
• Gas heat and heat pumps
• Chillers (10–300 tons, scroll and screw)
• Evaporative cooling systems
• Modulating compressors and fan systems
• EEVs, dampers, fluid control valves, and SCR electric heat

Note: WMS Mechanical Solutions does not service VRF systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain commercial HVAC equipment
• Perform equipment startups, inspections, warranty service, and preventative maintenance
• Troubleshoot electrical, refrigeration, airflow, controls, and communication issues
• Program and configure unit controllers and VFDs
• Read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and sequence-of-operation documents
• Work with BAS systems and digital control interfaces
• Communicate professionally with customers, vendors, and team members
• Complete service reports and documentation using digital tools, including email, PDFs, and Microsoft Teams
• Maintain safe work practices at all times
• Participate in occasional overtime and travel as needed

Requirements

Required Qualifications

• Commercial HVAC service experience
• EPA Certification
• Strong electrical and refrigeration troubleshooting skills
• Experience working with complex commercial HVAC systems
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
• Comfortable using computers, tablets, and mobile technology
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Experience

• 3-phase electrical diagnostics
• Superheat and subcooling analysis
• Compressor diagnostics
• BAS and controls systems
• VFD troubleshooting
• BACnet and MS/TP communication protocols
• Airflow balancing and static pressure diagnostics

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

Candidates must be comfortable with:

• Daily ladder use and rooftop access
• Working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat
• Carrying tools and materials up and down ladders
• Occasional 10+ hour workdays
• Working additional days during peak workload periods
• Occasional overnight travel or out-of-town assignments
• Regular lifting of 50+ pounds
• Computer-based communication and documentation
• Learning and utilizing new HVAC software, controls platforms, and diagnostic tools
