Position Overview The Colorado Department of Human Services, Division of Youth Services (DYS) is hiring a Direct Care/Essential Officer for our secure facilities. The position requires a dedicated professional to provide supervision, safety, and programming among adjudicated or pre‑adjudicated youth. Key Responsibilities Safety/Security: Provide direct care, supervise youth or groups, manage behavioral plans, intervene during crises, deescalate conflicts, and conduct searches. Youth Center Programming: Implement the Youth Center’s behavioral management program, coach, redirect, and support DYS initiatives. Documentation/Recording and Reporting: Record observations, maintain logs, and upload all unit activities to the required systems. Training: Complete the DYS Pre‑Service Training Academy, orientation, and ongoing mandatory training. Organizational Accountability: Uphold the Division’s values, comply with all policies, and contribute to a trauma‑responsive environment. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). One (2) years of professional experience in a related field (work with youth, behavior management, or secure settings). Minimum age of 21 years. Valid, unrestricted Colorado driver’s license. Physical ability to stand, climb stairs, and physically intervene if necessary. No felony convictions or history of domestic violence. Passes Colorado background investigations (CBI, FBI, Diana Screen®, and other required checks). Preferred Qualifications College education in behavioral health, juvenile justice, or a related field. Experience working with adjudicated or detained youth in a secure residence or behavioral health setting. Experience facilitating psycho‑educational or skills‑building groups. Experience supporting youth with trauma histories. Experience in mentoring or coaching youth. Proficiency in verbal de‑escalation and motivational techniques. Relevant state service experience. Clear verbal communication and respectfulness. Ability to identify and communicate hazards or security breaches. Ability to record events accurately and concisely. Work Environment & Conditions Shifts include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays; durations may be 8, 10, or 12 hours. Overtime and mandatory travel to training or alternate sites may be required. The position is physically demanding and requires individuals to be on their feet, climb stairs, and respond to incidents. Employees must be willing to work during inclement weather and meet all background‑screening requirements.
