Job Title Biochemist I/II - Purification Location San Diego Job Summary Biology and biochemistry researchers at BioLegend seek a self‑motivated individual with production experience in a fast‑moving environment. The Biochemist I will be an integral member of the purification team, manufacturing and providing purified antibodies to enable research for precision medicine, oncology, immunology, neuroscience, and stem cell science. You will report to a team leader and ensure the highest quality of finalized antibody products, performing antibody purification via column chromatography both manually and automatically, troubleshooting issues, improving methodologies, following SOPs, and cross‑training on supporting tasks. Essential Functions Follow and understand SOPs and batch records, complying with ISO policies and procedures. Be proficient in purification of monoclonal, polyclonal, and recombinant antibodies, performing tasks such as procurement of reagents, dilution, endotoxin testing, concentration, and buffer exchange. Demonstrate a basic understanding of antibody protein structures and purification methods. Calculate antibody amounts, concentrations, and dilutions as needed. Operate lab equipment including AKTA(s), analytical balances, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, nanodrop, UV detectors, chart recorders, biosafety cabinets, and pH meters. Work on multiple projects simultaneously, both individually and in a team, and assist in troubleshooting discussions. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience Associate’s degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or related field, or equivalent work experience. Minimum of 1 year of relevant lab experience with column chromatography, analytical assays, and detection methods in a manufacturing or full‑time academic setting. Preferred Qualifications – Education and Experience Bachelor’s of science in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or related field, or equivalent experience. Familiarity with ERP/MRP databases to execute production orders. Experience with aseptic technique in a biosafety cabinet, basic protein purification, and assays such as endotoxin testing, SDS‑PAGE, IEF, and SEC. Ability to perform column chromatography and use lab equipment such as AKTA, columns, balances, pipettes, spectrophotometers, nanodrop, UV detectors, agarose gels, endotoxin (LAL) tests, and pH meters. Ability to meet important deadlines and due dates. Strong multitasking/prioritization skills. Strong oral and written communication skills. Work Environment & Physical Demands Regularly work in a laboratory environment with occasional data entry on a computer and occasional warehouse exposure. Physical demands include use of hands and fingers, standing, speaking, hearing, reaching, and frequent movement. No hazardous chemicals or heavy lifting above 10 pounds. Compensation and Benefits Hourly pay ranges from $22.00–$29.00 per hour, with possible adjustments for level I or II based on experience and qualifications. The base pay will be determined by internal equity, location, and additional factors such as skills and training. Bonuses, equity, or other benefits are subject to the level and position offered.
