Job Title: Superintendent – Commercial Interior Construction
Job Description
This role supports field operations by assisting in the day-to-day execution of commercial interior construction projects under the direction of senior field leadership. The Superintendent I helps coordinate site activities, track progress, and ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with project plans and quality standards. The position works closely with trade partners, project teams, and vendors to support scheduling, logistics, documentation, and communication throughout the project lifecycle. This is an excellent opportunity to build foundational leadership and construction management skills while contributing to a well-organized, safe, and collaborative jobsite environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist with daily field operations under the direction of the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.
- Support tracking of daily work activities and production progress to ensure alignment with project goals.
- Help maintain site organization, cleanliness, and basic safety standards at all times.
- Observe trade activities and report progress, issues, or concerns to field leadership promptly.
- Assist in verifying that work is performed in accordance with drawings, specifications, and project requirements.
- Participate in regular site walks to deepen understanding of project execution and field conditions.
- Document field conditions, issues, and completed work in an organized and timely manner.
- Support implementation of established field processes and procedures on the jobsite.
- Assist with manpower tracking and completion of daily reports to support project controls.
- Promote accountability by following direction and completing assigned tasks reliably and on schedule.
- Develop and maintain 3-week look-ahead schedules in collaboration with trade partners.
- Partner with Project Managers to maintain detailed project schedules and update them as needed.
- Monitor critical path activities and long-lead items and escalate concerns to project leadership.
- Create and participate in pull planning and phase planning sessions to support efficient workflow.
- Monitor schedule performance and help implement corrective actions when delays or issues arise.
- Hold trade partners accountable to project milestones and contractual commitments in coordination with leadership.
- Support coordination of deliveries, material staging, and site access to minimize disruptions.
- Track progress of scheduled activities and communicate delays, conflicts, or constraints to project leadership.
- Assist in coordinating daily trade partner activities to support planned sequencing and workflow.
- Help identify potential field risks and communicate mitigation needs to project leadership.
- Support alignment of daily field operations with the overall project schedule and site logistics plans.
- Assist in documenting field impacts, schedule changes, and evolving site conditions.
- Maintain logs related to deliveries, manpower, and daily site activities to support reporting and analysis.
- Participate in coordination and planning meetings to support effective project execution.
- Assist with implementation of site logistics and operational plans developed by project leadership.
- Support communication between field teams, trade partners, and project management regarding scheduling priorities.
- Support project execution from mobilization through closeout, including punch lists and turnover activities.
- Assist with communication and coordination with trade partners and vendors to maintain smooth operations.
- Attend coordination and progress meetings and document key takeaways for the project team.
- Help track and distribute project updates, RFIs, and field communications in a timely manner.
- Maintain organized project records and support closeout activities such as punch lists and turnover documentation.
- Develop professional working relationships with project stakeholders, including trade partners and vendors.
- Ensure timely communication of field information and issues to the broader project team.
- Track trade partner work progress and report performance concerns to field leadership.
- Support documentation for change orders and field directives by capturing relevant field data.
- Help monitor material usage and deliveries to support cost and schedule control.
- Assist in identifying scope gaps or inconsistencies in the field and escalate them appropriately.
- Support cost tracking through daily reports and field data collection.
- Maintain organized records of field-related cost impacts and changes.
- Build positive working relationships with trade partners based on respect and collaboration.
- Manage the quality control process to help ensure inspections are successful and compliant.
- Perform basic field inspections under supervision to verify workmanship and adherence to specifications.
- Verify that installed work aligns with drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
- Assist with coordination of third-party inspections and testing activities.
- Maintain organized quality documentation and logs to support project closeout and compliance.
- Support punch list tracking and closeout activities to ensure timely and complete project delivery.
- Promote attention to detail and quality in daily work and interactions on site.
- Follow all company safety policies and jobsite requirements without exception.
- Assist in conducting safety walks and identifying potential hazards on the jobsite.
- Attend safety meetings and toolbox talks and apply learnings in daily work.
- Report unsafe conditions or behaviors immediately to appropriate leadership.
- Support documentation of safety observations and incidents in accordance with company procedures.
- Assist with maintaining safety records and logs to support compliance and continuous improvement.
- Promote a safety-first mindset in daily activities and reinforce this through personal example.
- Demonstrate willingness to learn and take direction from field leadership.
- Support team coordination and communication efforts to maintain a cohesive field operation.
- Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic, especially in high-pressure situations.

Essential Skills
- 8+ years of experience in commercial interior construction, with flexibility to consider 5–8 years of experience for exceptionally strong candidates.
- 3+ years of experience specifically in Chicago commercial interior projects.
- Hands-on experience delivering commercial interior projects, including workplace, restaurant, and retail environments.
- Proficiency with construction scheduling tools such as Microsoft Project or Outbuild.
- Experience using Procore or similar construction management software for documentation and coordination.
- Strong understanding of field operations, including coordination of trade partners, logistics, and daily site activities.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications and verify field work against them.
- Demonstrated ability to track daily work activities, manpower, and production progress.
- Solid knowledge of quality control practices, inspections, and punch list processes in commercial interiors.
- Strong commitment to jobsite safety and adherence to safety policies and procedures.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with field teams, trade partners, vendors, and project management.
- Proven ability to maintain organized documentation, logs, and project records.
- Ability to support and maintain project schedules, including 3-week look-ahead planning and monitoring critical path activities.
- Professionalism and reliability in following direction and completing assigned tasks.
- Capability to build positive working relationships with trade partners and project stakeholders.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- OSHA 30 certification is preferred; if not currently held, the company will support and pay for obtaining it.
- An associate or bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred but not required.
- Experience managing or supporting commercial interior projects in the $1M–$10M+ range.
- Ability, at senior levels, to represent the company in front of clients and participate in pitching for work.
- Interest in growing from a Junior Superintendent through more senior superintendent roles as opportunities arise.
- Curiosity and a proactive approach to learning construction management and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated empathy, integrity, perseverance, and curiosity in prior roles.
- Stable work history in commercial interiors; candidates without commercial interior experience or with highly unstable resumes may not be a fit unless there are clearly valid reasons for transitions.
Work Environment
This is a site-based role on commercial interior projects located in downtown Chicago. The portfolio focuses primarily on workplace interiors, with additional projects in restaurant and retail environments, and may also support sectors such as amenity, retail, hospitality, healthcare, lab and life sciences, and education. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, generally from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., aligned with field operations and trade partner schedules. The work takes place in active construction environments that require strict adherence to safety protocols, use of appropriate personal protective equipment, and consistent attention to site organization and cleanliness. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $90000.00 - $160000.00/yr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
