Unit is a medical-surgical inpatient setting with a focus on stroke and a variety of post-operative patients. RNs on this unit care for a mix of patients including stroke cases, amputations, chest tubes, feeding tubes, wound care, and COPD/exacerbations, with typical patient loads and care needs that require strong assessment and critical thinking skills. Illinois RN license, current CPR/BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS are relevant for this role; stroke-certified candidates are preferred and NHISS/NIHSS-related certifications are expected as part of the qualification set.

- Unit details: 25-bed medical-surgical unit with a mix of private and semi-private rooms; care includes stroke patients, post-operative cases, drains, and routine med-surg needs
- Staffing patterns: days 5:1 ratio; nights 5-6:1 ratio, with occasional total care patients
- Travel assignment: standard travel-nurse engagement with a defined start, end, and extension potential

Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care for adult med-surg patients, including monitoring, assessment, documentation, and medication administration
- Manage care for stroke patients and a variety of post-operative cases (amputations, drains, chest tubes, feeding tubes); implement wound care and catheter/drain management as needed
- Monitor for changes in patient status, respond to alarms, administer IV therapies and heparin drips, and coordinate with the multidisciplinary team
- Assist with discharge planning, patient and family education, and coordination with other services to ensure safe transitions of care
- Maintain accurate documentation in the medical record, ensure infection control and safety practices, and comply with HIPAA and healthcare regulations
- Participate in shift handoffs, collaborate with physicians, therapists, and support staff, and contribute to a patient-centered care plan
- Availability for three 12-hour night shifts per week, with every-other weekend and every-other holiday as part of the schedule

Requirements
- Active Illinois Registered Nurse license
- Current CPR/BLS certification
- ACLS certification
- NIHSS certification or demonstrated NIHSS competency
- Stroke care experience or stroke certification preferred; ability to work on a med-surg unit with stroke and post-operative patients
- Ability to perform 12-hour night shifts and meet the unit's scheduling requirements (three shifts per week, with alternating weekends/holidays)
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in an inpatient med-surg setting, with strong assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills
