For more information about Oakland County benefits and employee perks, please visit: General Summary $24.94- $29.09 Do you want to serve your community and help ensure the safety of visitors across Oakland County Parks? Under limited supervision, you’ll perform a variety of law enforcement duties within the Parks system, responding to incidents, maintaining public order, and enforcing park rules and regulations. In this unique role, you’ll also conduct mounted patrols throughout park grounds and trails, providing visibility, accessibility, and community engagement in areas not reachable by vehicle. What You’ll Do Investigate accidents, complaints, and other incidents, and prepare detailed reports. Respond to disturbances and emergencies to maintain peace and public safety. Apprehend, restrain, and assist in the arrest of individuals when necessary. Represent the Sheriff’s Office at parades and special events. Utilize Countywide and department‑specific software to complete assignments and maintain accurate records. Work primarily on weekends and holidays when public activity is highest. Minimum Qualifications Be a high school graduate or have a certificate of successful completion of the General Education Development (G.E.D.) Test. Have not been convicted of a violation of criminal law including domestic violence. Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license. Out of Country driver’s license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver’s license before the hire date. Have at least 20/20 corrected vision in both eyes and have normal color vision and depth perception in both eyes. Have normal corrected hearing in each ear. Own a horse and own or have access to a horse trailer and tow vehicle. Pass the complete examination, including the employment physical required for this classification. Patrol County parks riding a horse and enforce State Law statutes and Local and Park ordinances and park rules by assisting and informing the public and by issuing citations when necessary. Special Requirements Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license and firearms qualification and deputization status. Must complete annual horsemanship training as established by the Sheriff’s Office. Own a horse and own or have access to a horse trailer and tow vehicle. A field investigation will be conducted covering an evaluation of employment, school, home, credit, criminal, military, or other personal records. Any conviction or convictions for moving traffic violations, accidents, non‑moving traffic violations, or violations of other laws will be reviewed by the Sheriff’s Office before an applicant can be appointed. Information obtained during the background investigation will be considered in the hiring decision. Convictions of the Domestic Violence Statue will be a disqualifying factor. Additional Duties & Responsibilities Answer and investigate complaints made by the general public regarding accidents, property damage, and other problems occurring in County parks. Prepare accident reports or other reports indicating findings on a situation and submit to supervisor. Respond to disturbances and maintain order in the parks by warning individuals, apprehending disorderly persons, and enforcing park rules and regulations. Assist in making arrests. Answer emergency calls in case of illness, injury, fire, or other disruptions in the daily operations of the parks. May provide emergency first aid services until assistance arrives and provide first‑response fire‑fighting service until local fire fighting units arrive. Enforce the recreational trespassing statute (P.A. 261) by assisting and informing the public and by issuing citations when necessary. Enforce order and perform Mounted Patrol duties at ceremonies, parades, and other special events as assigned by the Sheriff. Utilize current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments. Essential Mental & Physical Requirements Ability to guard an area for a full eight hour day, operate a motor vehicle, speak and give commands, perform inspections and deliver items. Ability to ride a horse. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and/or be a passenger. Working Conditions Work is generally performed in an outdoor environment with exposure to heat, cold, and other weather elements. May participate in activities that require driving or being a passenger in an automobile or bus. Additional Desirable Qualifications Have completed horsemanship training as established by the Sheriff’s Office. Reasonable ability to make decisions under adverse conditions. Reasonable ability to follow oral and written instructions. Reasonable ability and skill in writing general reports. Reasonable ability to provide information to the general public. Reasonable ability to make routine decisions in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Reasonable ability and skill in maintaining prescribed items of uniform clothing and personal equipment issued by the department. Reasonable skill in the use of firearms. Reasonable knowledge of first‑aid methods. Some experience performing security work that requires the exercise of independent judgment based on reasonable knowledge of security practices and procedures. Familiar with current word processing, spreadsheet, database, e‑mail and Internet software.
