Required criteria: Valid New Jersey School Nurse Certificate. Demonstrated expertise in school health nursing practice. Knowledge of child growth and development, community and family dynamics, current health issues, and wellness education. Knowledge of community health and social services resources and ability to communicate effectively with nonschool health professionals and social service agencies. Required criminal history background check and proof of US citizenship or legal resident alien status. Current CPR certification.

Qualifications:

1. Current license to practice professional nursing in New Jersey.

2. Valid New Jersey School Nurse Certificate.

3. Knowledge of child growth and development, community and family dynamics, current health issues, and wellness education.

4. Strong communication skills and knowledge of community health and social services resources.

5. Required criminal history background check and proof of US citizenship.

6. Current CPR, AED, & Oxygen certificate.

7. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports to: Principal and Supervisor of Athletics/Nurses

Supervises: Health Aide

Overall Responsibility:

With expertise and certification in school health, the registered professional nurse who works in the school setting, strengthens and facilitates the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children. The certified school nurse is uniquely qualified in preventive health, health assessment, and referral procedures.

Essential Areas of Responsibility:

1. Provide Health Assessments a. Obtain health and developmental history. b. Screens and evaluates findings for deficits in vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, etc. c. Referral of all health findings not within normal range.

2. Works in cooperation with the school physician, members of the staff, parents and community health professionals to ensure a healthy school climate and to minimize absence.

3. Provides emergency care in case of sudden illness and administers first-aid in case of injury to students or staff according to established policies and procedures.

4. Maintains up-to-date health records on all students, and ensures their confidentiality.

5. Helps prevent and control communicable disease through inspections, exclusion and re-admission of students and staff in keeping with state and local health regulations and school policies.

6. Administration of prescribed medication to students in accordance with the law and Board policies.

7. Confers with and advises students, parents, and staff members on matters pertaining to the health and safety of students.

8. Assists the principal and the child study team in the identification and placement of students with disabilities who need special education services.

9. Serves as a health/safety education resource person to teachers.

10. Notifies principal or designee to arrange for immediate examination of any pupil who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.

11. Promotes healthy/safe school environment by assisting the administration and staff to maintain safe and sanitary conditions throughout the school and reports problems promptly to the principal.

12. Assists the principal with preparation of the school's health budget.

13. Maintains professional competence through in-service education and professional development activities.

14. Provides special health care and related services to meet the needs of all students.

15. Assists in the development of policies and procedures for comprehensive health services.

16. Reports any suspicion of child abuse to the Division of Child Protection and Permanency.

17. Prepares health and safety reports as required by law and/or requested by the principal.

18. Prepares Annual Immunization Status Report and Annual Report of TB testing in schools as required by law.

19. Performs all other duties as assigned by building principal and Supervisor of Athletics/Nurses.

Terms of Employment:

10 month contract Salary and fringe benefits as per negotiated agreement between the Pemberton Township Board of Education and the Pemberton Township Education Association.

Evaluation:

Job performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policies and procedures.
