PUBLIC HEALTH SOCIAL WORKER I

The work involves responsibility for performing professional public health social work in a local public health department. This position is in the field of public health social work and consists of professional assignments in a program designed to address social factors that impact on health, particularly those related to infant mortality, substance abuse, HIV infection and violence, or to those that create barriers to health or medical care. The work requires knowledge of social work techniques including assessment, casework, case management, short-term intervention, crisis counseling and consultation. A Public Health Social Worker I may be required to oversee the work of subordinate employees. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES In a variety of ways helps to promote public knowledge and utilization of health, medical care and health related community services. Conducts educational activities concerned with reducing behavioral risks associated with HIV infection, infant mortality, substance abuse and violence. Participates in research studies related to social and public health problems. Participates in inter‑agency case reviews, evaluations and conferences to discuss social aspects of health and medical care programs. Works with private, voluntary and other public agencies to identify the availability of medical and health related community services and to identify strategies to address the social factors that impact on health and well being. Assists with program development and the preparation of proposals and grants. Assists with the development and presentation of training materials. Attends conferences and participates in professional organizations and meetings. Oversees the work of subordinate staff in the provision of client centered services, including assessment, intervention plan and implementation of services, including case consultation, case review, and ongoing staff crisis intervention. Provides professional social work consultation to professionals in other disciplines within the Health Department as well as in other programs or agencies in the community. Participates in public health preparedness activities as trained and assigned. Utilizes appropriate methods for interacting effectively and professionally with persons of all ages and from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, lifestyles and physical abilities. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Good knowledge of the social sciences, including sociology, psychology and economics. Good knowledge of the principles and practices of social work. Working knowledge of public health social work. Working knowledge of social work programs and community resources. Working knowledge of social epidemiology and the interaction between social factors and health risks. Ability to establish and maintain effective inter-personal relationships. Ability to understand and interpret written material. Ability to prepare reports. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Candidates must be licensed as a Master Social Worker by the New York State Department of Education.
