ASIC/FPGA Research Engineer - Digital Design

Role Overview USC’s Information Sciences Institute (ISI) seeks an ASIC/FPGA Research Engineer – Digital Design in Arlington, VA. The engineer will design front‑end digital circuits for advanced ASIC and FPGA prototypes that address national‑level research problems. Responsibilities include working in a fast‑moving research environment, collaborating with senior researchers, and demonstrating system prototypes. Responsibilities Implement digital designs using Verilog or VHDL for ASIC and FPGA-based prototypes. Support research efforts by developing technical solutions to novel problems. Collaborate closely with senior researchers and contribute to team efforts that transform ideas into prototypes. Document and support system implementation, and contribute to technical publications. Initiate the design, development, and implementation of new research projects. Investigate feasibility of applying scientific principles to potential inventions and products. Plan and execute applied research projects. Oversee staff and students as needed. Qualifications Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related field. Bachelor’s degree with >3 years of industry experience or a Master’s degree. Successful experience creating digital designs with Verilog or VHDL. Solid understanding of computer architecture. Proficiency in scripting, revision control, and debugging/maintaining tools. Experience with FPGA-based design and front‑end bring‑up. Experience with design verification. Familiarity with agile hardware design methodologies. Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to give clear explanations. Preferred: Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, C++, or Go and experience with Linux. Employment Terms The position is funded by a contract or grant and may be subject to changes in funding. Termination due to funding change will provide one (1) month written notice. No severance benefits are provided; final paycheck includes pay for days worked and accrued/unused vacation. Unused sick days are not paid upon termination.
