Associate Counsel, Employee Benefits & Employment Counsel, Assistant Vice President

State Street is seeking an attorney with approximately 4-6 years of experience in U.S. employee benefits law who is interested in expanding into broader U.S. employment matters to join a busy corporate legal team. The role will be based in Boston, MA and is hybrid, with an expected in-office presence of four days per week. To achieve these outcomes we need teams like yours to help navigate employees and the organization as a whole. Responsibilities Review and update employee benefit, compensation plan documents, amendments, and related documentation. Support the design, implementation, and administration of compensation and benefit plans, including governance committees and required tax, securities, and governmental filings. Advise on ERISA, fiduciary duty, the Internal Revenue Code, HIPAA, COBRA, vendor management, and other issues related to qualified retirement plans, supplemental retirement plans, and health and welfare plans. Provide guidance to business partners on handling and responding to participant and/or benefit plan claim matters. Liaise with external service providers, including external counsel and outsourced administrators, to ensure compliance with U.S. (primarily) and foreign jurisdictions. Offer a critical perspective to internal Global Human Resources teams, leveraging strong problem‑solving and technical legal skills, and oversee a breadth of employee benefits, employee relations, and governance matters and projects. Provide support to senior attorneys on executive compensation, benefits, employment, and related matters. Ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities efficiently with a high caliber of execution. Strong organizational skills and independent follow‑through on issues and tasks. Sound judgment and the ability to manage sensitive and confidential matters. Capability to produce high‑quality work with general supervision. Qualifications J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school. Admitted to practice and in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction. 4-6 years of experience in employee benefits law. Ability to participate in video conferences on remote work days. Salary $90,000 - $157,500 per year. The range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location (Boston, MA). If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location, the applicable range could differ. Benefits 401(k) retirement savings plan with company match. Insurance coverage including basic life, medical, dental, vision, long‑term disability, and optional additional coverages. Paid time off: vacation, sick leave, short‑term disability, and family care responsibilities. Employee Assistance Program. Incentive compensation: eligibility for annual performance‑based awards (excluding certain sales roles subject to sales incentive plans). Eligibility for tax‑advantaged savings plans.
