Patrol Officers work 12‑hour shifts and rotate between days and night on a quarterly basis. Officers can laterally transfer to units such as Criminal Investigations, Drug, School Resource, Airport, Downtown, and many specialty units (SWAT, EOD, etc.). Responsibilities Conduct patrols on foot, bicycle, or in a police car to observe activities on City Borough streets, business establishments, residential areas, and public areas. Operate police vehicle; observe the public; investigate accidents; determine violations; issue citations; enforce compliance with laws and ordinances. Take charge of situations requiring law enforcement involvement, assess the situation, and determine immediate response. Administer first aid, direct traffic, and request emergency assistance. Perform on‑site personal interviews and record facts. Respond to calls for service or investigate civil and criminal complaints, crimes, disturbances, or other unusual circumstances. Question and obtain statements from witnesses, collect and preserve evidence, prepare criminal and civil complaints, serve process and citations. Refer victims to appropriate agencies (Family and Youth Services, medical authorities, domestic violence programs). Properly use specialized police equipment (cameras, radar, blood‑alcohol testing instruments, radios, less lethal and deadly weapons). Apprehend, pursue, restrain, and detain suspects and violators. Make arrests and transport prisoners. Testify in court in both civil and criminal cases. Prepare reports of investigations, activities, and conditions that are dangerous to the public or of unusual circumstances. Assist other law enforcement agencies. Complete special duty assignments such as public speaking, search and rescue, public educational programs, and special training sessions. Perform special police/community relations, investigation unit, or metro unit assignments. Perform other related duties as required. Education High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate. Other Requirements Must be a citizen of the United States or U.S. National. Not less than 21 years of age at time of appointment. Applicants must possess or obtain a valid Alaska Driver’s License by date of appointment. Juneau International Airport positions require a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge at time of appointment. Minimum Qualifications for Lateral Police Officer Service within any police/law enforcement department/agency in the State of Alaska. Cumulative related service in Alaska must include a minimum of one year of uniform patrol duty as a commissioned law enforcement officer (DPS Academy Certified) and validated evidence of successful completion of a related training academy certified by the appropriate state, federal or local regulatory or oversight agency. For service outside Alaska, the total related service must include a minimum of one year as defined below: Service in a city of at least 5,000 population. Service in a city that is part of a Metropolitan Area with at least 25,000 population. A current or former Police Officer must be in Good Standing to be employed or re‑employed. Military Police, Detention/Correction Officer, Reserve Officer, Park Ranger/Park Police, Capital Police, Detention/Jail/Court Security, Sheriff’s Deputy or Marshall, Special District Police, Railroad Police, Village Public Safety Officer, and federal law enforcement personnel will NOT be considered as previous related experience. Extra Experience Points 0 points for 1-2 years of experience. 5 points for Police Officers with 3 or more years of experience. 10 points for Police Officers with 3 or more years of experience and an Alaska Police Standards Council Police Officer Certificate. There are currently 11 vacant Police Officer positions. Once all vacancies are filled, this recruitment will be used to create an eligible list for future vacancies within the next twelve months subject to interview and re‑evaluation of the candidate’s current job performance. At the discretion of the Chief of Police, the eligible list may be extended up to two years from the effective date. The City and Borough of Juneau may revise or change the examinations or examining procedure at any time during the recruitment period and require candidates to meet the revised procedures to maintain eligibility for appointment.
