Core Values Invested in Serving Better Together Create Progress Support Through Compassion Position Purpose Correctional Officers provide supervision of inmates to maintain a safe and secure environment. They also provide for the medical, educational, emotional, spiritual and nutritional needs of the inmate population and support programs designed to help offenders reintegrate into the community. Hours Shift work with evenings, weekends, and holidays as required. Average 24 hours per week with some weekend and holiday duties. Location County Administration Building, 320 S. Walnut St, Appleton, Wisconsin. Key Responsibilities Conduct required physical checks of inmates and cell areas, monitor for safety and security threats, and verify inmate locations. Monitor inmate living areas via camera to ensure cleanliness, safety and security, conduct inspections and searches, and oversee recreational, educational and program activities. Distribute meals, canteen, mail, uniforms, bedding, and other supplies; escort inmates to and from visits and programs. Maintain accurate records of inmate counts, status changes, activities, events, and write detailed reports on incidents. Restrain hostile and non-compliant inmates as necessary, using minimal force as trained. Respond to emergency situations according to department policies and procedures. Take custody of, book and release inmates according to policy; record information; release and receive Huber inmates; monitor inmates via GPS tracking device. Control access to and from jail, greet, check ID, and document visitors. Conduct active law-enforcement measures within the jail setting. Protect others during crises or emergencies with little or no notice. Maintain calm, professional demeanor in emergencies. Accept the dangers, stresses and discipline associated with the position. Education, Certifications and Experience Requirements Minimum age 18 years. High school diploma, GED or equivalent. Must become Wisconsin Corrections Certified within the first year of employment. Successful completion of physical agility test, psychological test, and post-offer physical evaluation. Required or Preferred Skills Knowledge and use of department computer software and applications. Operate general office equipment such as copy and fax machines. Maintain the physical condition required by department standards. Effective communication in English. Basic math skills. Maintain regular attendance and work overtime/extra hours as necessary. Handle frequent exposure to high levels of danger. Maintain high level of physical conditioning. Essential Physical Demands Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods. Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs; frequent lifting up to 25 lbs. Push, pull or move with a force up to 51.2 lbs. Climb stairs up to 48 flights per shift. Maintain balance and perform stooping, kneeling, bending, reaching and twisting. Frequent use of hands and wrists; use both hands and both legs. Effective verbal communication and hearing capabilities. Adequate visual acuity for duties. Work Environment Secure correctional facility with frequent exposure to inmates, noises, odors, and emergency situations. Close proximity to potentially uncooperative or confrontational individuals. Interaction with law enforcement, medical staff and facility staff. Shift work including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Requires maintaining composure, judgment and adherence to security protocols.
