Job Description

The Mechanical Assembler works in sub-assembly and general assembly to build large window units and related components using hand and power tools. This role focuses on precise mechanical assembly, sealing and testing of window systems, and quality inspection throughout the manufacturing process. You will work with large pieces of glass, sheet metal, and steel frames, contributing to high-volume production while maintaining strict quality standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform mechanical assembly of window units and related components in sub-assembly and general assembly areas.
• Install metal brackets, fasteners, clips, and other hardware onto window units using hand and power tools.
• Apply caulking using caulking guns to seal window units and ensure proper filling of spaces.
• Learn and perform testing on caulking products to verify the quality of window seals.
• Paint the ends of materials as required and work with insulation materials such as large foam pads.
• Wrap and net final units, ensuring proper packaging and protection before storage or shipment.
• Inspect units throughout the assembly and manufacturing process for flaws, defects, or quality issues.
• Handle and work around very large panes of glass, sheet metal, and steel frames with a high level of precision and care.
• Stand and walk for an 8-hour shift while assembling units that are typically waist-high and up to approximately 30 feet long.
• Assist in sub-assembly during production wait times to support overall workflow and maintain productivity.
• Retrieve materials and participate in unit testing in outdoor yard areas and designated testing booths when required.
• Read and interpret blueprints and measurements accurately to ensure correct assembly and fitting.
• Use tape measures proficiently to take and verify measurements for fabrication, fitting, and installation tasks.
• Perform fabrication, fitting, installation, inspection, and troubleshooting tasks related to mechanical assembly.
• Follow construction and installation procedures and contribute to quality control activities.
• Meet daily and overall production goals for assigned departments and assembly lines.
• Accept cross-training in various areas of the production process and learn different tasks as needed.
• Remain flexible in moving to any area, including insulation and other departments, based on production needs.
• Respond positively to feedback and demonstrate a strong “can do” attitude and willingness to take on tasks wherever needed.
• Maintain a high level of attention to detail and quality assurance in all aspects of assembly work.
• Work safely around loud machinery, large components, and busy assembly lines, following all safety procedures and wearing required PPE.

Essential Skills

• Minimum 3 years of experience in a mechanical role in manufacturing, construction, or similar hands-on mechanical environments.
• 2–3 years of experience in the mechanical field.
• 1–2 years of experience using hand and power tools and tape measures in an assembly or construction setting.
• 1–2 years of experience reading and working from blueprints.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with strong hands-on skills.
• Proficiency in using hand tools and power tools, including drills and other common mechanical tools.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints for mechanical assembly and fabrication tasks.
• Strong tape measure skills; must be able to read and use a tape measure proficiently.
• Experience in mechanical assembly, fitting, fabrication, installation, and inspection.
• Experience in manufacturing or construction (such as deck building, contracting, or home improvement) with familiarity in large unit assembly.
• Experience in quality assurance and quality control within a mechanical or manufacturing environment.
• Ability to perform troubleshooting on mechanical assemblies and components.
• Proven flexibility in previous roles, with willingness to perform tasks wherever needed.
• Demonstrated ability to receive and respond well to feedback, supported by positive references.
• Strong listening skills, positive approach to work, and a consistent “can do” attitude.
• Capability to work around and handle large pieces of glass, sheet metal, and steel frames safely and accurately.
• Ability to stand, walk, and perform physical assembly tasks for an 8-hour shift.
• Minimum 6 months of experience in an assembly-type role with regular use of hand and power tools.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with mechanical assembly in environments similar to large unit manufacturing or construction projects.
• Experience with companies or locations where power tools and hand tools are regularly utilized, such as construction or home improvement settings.
• Exposure to construction management practices and coordination of installation and assembly tasks.
• Computer skills are a plus, including basic data entry or use of production-related systems.
• Experience with inspection processes and documentation in a manufacturing or construction environment.
• Familiarity with troubleshooting mechanical issues in assembled units.
• Ability to adapt quickly to different areas of the production process and learn new tasks without complaint.
• Comfort working with insulation materials such as large foam pads and willingness to wear protective suits (e.g., Tyvek) to keep dust off clothing when required.
• Strong teamwork skills and ability to work effectively in a busy, high-volume manufacturing environment.
• Reliability in meeting production goals and supporting cross-functional teams across multiple assembly lines.

Work Environment

This role is based in a non-climate-controlled manufacturing facility with loud machinery and a high level of activity due to numerous assemblers and large-scale production. You will work with very large pieces of glass, sheet metal, and steel frames in a large-piece assembly environment, requiring careful handling and attention to safety. Much of the product and materials are stored both inside and outside, so tasks such as material handling and unit testing may involve exposure to outdoor conditions. The team-oriented environment is fast-paced and busy, with cross-functional collaboration across different assembly areas. The standard shift runs from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with the expectation of overtime during the week and mandatory Saturday work when specific lines or departments fall behind schedule. Employees may wear Tyvek suits in insulation areas to keep dust off clothing, and prescription safety glasses and steel-toed boots are supported through dedicated programs. Overall, the work environment is hands-on, physically active, and focused on meeting production goals while maintaining safety and quality.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chester, VA.

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
