Social Work Supervisor

Introduction This examination is being given to fill 3 vacancies in Aging and Child Protective Services (CPS) within the Human Services Agency and to establish an eligible list to fill future vacancies. The county pays for the initial drug screen. Typical Duties Plans, assigns, and reviews work of a group of social workers engaged in providing social services; instructs new workers in interviewing, case recording, assessments, evaluations, and developing service plans. Deals with client complaints and refers problems to other agency staff as appropriate. Participates in establishing and maintaining effective social service programs; assists in assessing community service needs, evaluates program effectiveness, and recommends changes. Assists in developing community resources. Analyzes and interprets regulations, policies, procedures, and contracts; reviews cases for regulatory compliance; serves as information resource for staff. Explains departmental functions and goals to community groups, local officials, and agency representatives; ensures eligible individuals are aware of service programs; interprets program scope and limitations; researches and answers public inquiries and complaints. Evaluates effectiveness of policies and procedures. Coordinates social service programs with other agencies to ensure effective delivery of services; participates in developing uniform guidelines and procedures. Reviews and develops interagency agreements for approval by administration. Develops and participates in outreach, staff training, and public information activities for the program area. Directs research studies and prepares reports. Enters and retrieves information from an automated computer system; assists with training and problem solving for social workers. Minimum Qualifications Pattern I Education/License: Master’s degree in social work with supervised field placement, or a valid California Marriage and Family Therapy license. Experience: Two (2) years paid full‑time social casework at a level comparable to Social Worker IV in Child Protective Services or Adult Protective Services within a public or government agency. Pattern II Education: Master’s degree in behavioral science, sociology, psychology, counseling, or a closely related social/human services field. Experience: Three (3) years paid full‑time social casework, including one year of post‑master’s experience at a level comparable to Social Worker IV in Child Protective Services or Adult Protective Services within a public or government agency. For All Patterns License: Valid California driver’s license. Special Requirement: Positions in Children’s Services units may require an MSW to comply with state regulation. Assignments to the Multipurpose Senior Services Program require one (1) year of experience working with the elderly. Knowledge Principles and techniques of supervision, training, and casework consultation; basic human behavior; social work theories, principles, and techniques; interviewing techniques; the social and economic needs of the service population; basic management principles; public social service agency functions; community organization; resources for referral; applicable laws, rules, and regulations. Ability Communicates orally with a wide variety of people; reads and understands technical social work material; interprets and applies rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; classifies case problems; evaluates effectiveness; analyzes situations accurately; applies interpersonal skills; develops and maintains cooperative relationships with community groups and resource agencies; relates to clients; evaluates workers’ performance; operates a computer.
