Lead Medical Support Assistant

Duties

The Lead Medical Support Assistant works within the Acute Care Service as the primary administrative support for patient admissions, discharges, and transfers. The role serves as the unit's receptionist and manages patient records, verifies physician orders, maintains census information, coordinates communication, orders supplies, schedules follow up appointments, and troubleshoots equipment. A key responsibility is acting as a work leader: distributing and balancing workload, ensuring timely completion of tasks, monitoring work quality, and keeping supervisors informed of progress. The Lead MSA trains team members, provides ongoing guidance, demonstrates correct work methods, and ensures all inpatient MSAs have the knowledge and skills needed for daily duties. The Lead MSA position also involves maintaining efficient workflow, resolving daily operational issues, organizing work structures, scheduling staff, ensuring training requirements are met, orienting new employees, and serving as liaison between MSAs and clinical staff to address day-to-day conflicts. Accurate appointment scheduling, policy communication, and quality assurance are critical components of this role. The LMSA reports to supervisors on staff performance, progress, training needs, and behavioral concerns, and provides input regarding promotions, reassignments, recognition, and personnel requirements. As a work leader, they provide technical direction, train the team, oversee workflow, and ensure timely task completion. Additionally, they prepare and validate timecards for nursing and non-nursing staff within Patient Care Services/Nursing Service, ensuring accuracy and timely submission for supervisor approval

Pay

Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off

Parental Leave
