Job Summary CIR is looking for a Regional Director to oversee its chapters located in the Southern California Region. This position will report to the Chief of Staff. You will drive and implement CIR’s national agenda at the regional level, developing the field program and collaborating with the public affairs team on political and values‑based programming, and assist with the union’s growth/new organizing program. You will be responsible for overseeing membership engagement, growth and the leadership development in the region’s hospital worksites. You will be responsible for contract implementation and enforcement, organizing around issues and directing contract campaigns in collaboration with CIR’s research and collective bargaining department as well as development of strategic relationships within the hospital and the community. You will supervise worksite organizers and other staff. What You’ll Do Develop plan with Member leaders to implement CIR’s national agenda. Design, implement and supervise the execution of strategic plans to address workplace issues and other matters for the assigned area. Develop strategic goals for team members, proactively identify needs of the organization, respond with solutions and implement effective changes. Responsible for leadership development, membership growth and engagement. Ensure collective bargaining agreements are enforced and implemented at assigned chapters. Work in collaboration with other department heads, field directors and Member leaders to execute field plans and achieve organizational goals. Guide the implementation of field plans in support of collective bargaining and participate in negotiations, as needed. Develop strategic relationships within assigned hospitals and the community. Provide written communications and reports to members, union leaders, Executive Committee and CIR staff as needed. Supervise, develop and give timely evaluations to staff to ensure they are achieving local, statewide and national goals. Work with the political team to develop and implement a regional COPE plan. Provide coaching and mentorship for direct reports, conduct regular evaluations, and create staff development plans. Oversee the engagement of members on hospital and CIR issues, and support organizers with contract organizing and membership growth campaigns. Assist in new organizing and political campaigns in the area. Approve expenses, time off, and other administrative functions for the staff. Track and maintain accurate records and databases. What Makes a Great Candidate Four years or more of organizing experience in the labor movement including at least two years’ of experience managing/supervising staff required. Must be able to manage with the values of the labor movement and be willing to constantly improve as a manager. Healthcare organizing experience preferred in both public and private sectors, but not required. Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with community allies, electeds and hospital administrators to support contract organizing campaigns. Ability to quickly learn resident life/training, hospital operations and finance, and relevant economic and political issues. Familiarity with labor law (in local jurisdictions), libel/free speech laws, collective bargaining, unfair labor practices, mediation and arbitration processes. Demonstrates respectful and responsible behavior, and possesses the ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment. Strong planning and time management skills, ability to prioritize and develop work plans with minimal supervision including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks. Possesses excellent listening, interpersonal, communication and problem‑solving skills. The ability to thrive and operate in a fast‑paced, mission driven environment with quick thinking, energy, humor, flexibility, and above all professionalism. Proven ability to work with diverse group of people. Demonstrated ability to motivate, lead, build strong working relationships and hold others accountable while building respect and trust. Demonstrated ability to contribute to creating a positive work environment that encourages personal responsibility, initiative and innovation and engages the team in the work and values of CIR. Appropriately manages conflict, disagreements and adversarial situations among staff. Ability to critically evaluate one’s own performance and incorporate feedback into improving performance. Ability to support, model and coach staff through honest, clear and timely feedback; able to facilitate the learning of others, both formally and informally. Actively and effectively develops the skills and autonomy of staff to meet organizational needs and individual staff’s professional goals. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Fluency with Google products such as Gmail and Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides & Drive). Technologically proficient; willingness to learn new operating platforms to make hybrid organizing work with remote teams effective. Must reside in the Los Angeles, California area. 4‑year degree, BA/BS, preferred, but not required. Ability to work long hours. Must be fully vaccinated for Covid in accordance with CDC guidelines, subject to any laws of the state in which the applicant resides. Must have a valid driver’s license. CIR Offers This is a full‑time, salaried, overtime‑exempt position. The salary for this position is $144,442.
