DOE-STP Office of Policy Fellowship Opportunity

Job Overview The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Science, Technology and Policy Program (DOE‑STP) offers an ORISE Fellowship to students, postgraduates, and faculty. Fellows gain hands‑on experience in DOE operations and culture, deepening their understanding of federal energy policy and applying scientific, policy, and technical knowledge to develop solutions to DOE‑relevant issues. Responsibilities Receive guidance from a Mentor and learn about conducting research analysis within the Office of Policy. Engage with current OP staff on policy analysis projects and assignments in one of the following focus areas: Power Sector – analyze and design policies to support affordable, reliable electricity, including markets for AI data centers and new manufacturing. Critical Minerals – support implementation activities related to executive orders for critical minerals and conduct in‑depth research on domestic production of processed critical minerals. Energy Jobs – research initiatives to ensure a U.S. workforce meets evolving energy sector needs and create employment opportunities. Permitting – assess opportunities to accelerate permitting processes through innovative technology solutions. Perform technical and economic research involving data analysis, regulatory analysis, and modeling. Assist with producing research reports, presentation materials, spreadsheet analyses, briefing papers, and other written and oral materials. Help prepare databases, retrieve information, and conduct web searches. Qualifications Earned or currently pursuing a Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral degree in engineering, economics, natural sciences, or public policy with an emphasis on energy‑related application. Degree completed within the last five years; if more than five years, applicant must have relevant academic background and experience and seek new knowledge. Technical expertise with oil, natural gas, and other energy resources; policy assessment methods including economic and modeling skills; and computer software products. Research experience and excellent written and oral presentation skills. Both educational work and professional experience in energy‑related fields. Location and Start Date Washington, D.C. – The fellowship begins immediately; exact start dates are coordinated with selected candidates. Benefits and Stipend Participants receive a stipend based on academic standing, discipline, experience, and location; supplemental stipend may cover health insurance costs. Participants may purchase health insurance through ORISE and receive an allowance for education or scientific activities as approved. Eligibility Requirements Citizenship: U.S. Citizen only. Age: Minimum 18 years.
