PROGRAM SUPPORT SPECIALIST

Job Summary

The Program Support Specialist supports the daily delivery of the AYES Afterschool Program by providing direct supervision, mentoring, academic support, and enrichment activities for middle school youth.

Working collaboratively with the Site Coordinator and other program staff, this position helps maintain a safe, structured, engaging, and supportive environment where students can develop academically, socially, and personally. The Program Support Specialist also assists with classroom management, program activities, documentation, and daily operational needs.

 

Job Responsibilities

Youth Development & Program Support

• Provide appropriate supervision, mentoring, encouragement, and support to participating youth.
• Build positive, professional relationships with students and encourage learning, engagement, personal growth, and positive decision-making.
• Assist with implementing assigned AYES curriculum, enrichment activities, academic support, tutoring, and other youth-development programming.
• Help maintain a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and engaging program environment.
• Use approved classroom and behavior-management practices and reinforce established program expectations.
• Serve as a positive role model and maintain appropriate professional boundaries with youth.

Daily Operations & Team Support

• Assist with daily program operations, including student arrival and dismissal, attendance, transitions, activities, meals/snacks, program setup, and cleanup.
• Work collaboratively with the Site Coordinator, program staff, contractors, volunteers, and designated AYES leadership.
• Follow established program schedules, lesson plans, procedures, and supervisory direction.
• Assist with field trips, special events, family activities, and other AYES programming as assigned.
• Promptly communicate behavioral concerns, safety issues, incidents, operational concerns, or other significant matters to the appropriate supervisor.
• Provide additional program support consistent with assigned responsibilities and level of training when needed.

Documentation, Safety & Compliance

• Assist with maintaining accurate attendance, participation records, and other required program documentation.
• Complete assigned records and documentation accurately and within established deadlines.
• Follow AYES policies and applicable partner/funder requirements, including relevant NAZA program expectations.
• Maintain student and family confidentiality and follow applicable data-protection and information-sharing procedures.
• Follow all requirements related to youth safety, safeguarding, professional conduct, emergency procedures, and incident reporting.
• Participate in required supervision, staff meetings, training, and professional development.
• Perform other reasonable duties consistent with the responsibilities and purpose of the position.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education or training in education, youth development, human services, or a related field preferred.
• At least one year of experience working with children or youth preferred.
• Experience working with middle school youth, after-school programs, mentoring, tutoring, education, recreation, or community-based programming preferred.
• Strong communication, reliability, organization, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to build positive and appropriate relationships with young people.
• Ability to follow established curriculum, program procedures, and supervisory direction.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• Willingness and ability to learn and consistently apply appropriate classroom and behavior-management practices.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and complete assigned documentation.
• Must successfully complete required background screening and other youth-serving organization requirements.
• Must complete required AYES and applicable partner/funder training.
• Must obtain and/or maintain CPR/First Aid certification as required for the position.

Selected candidates must successfully complete applicable employment and youth-serving organization requirements, including required background screening, reference verification, training, youth-safety requirements, and any additional requirements established by AYES, its funders, or school partners.
