Accounting I

Our client is looking for a Temporary-Long Term Accounting I to who will be responsible for monitoring and reconciling daily cash and check activity across multiple departments, including Utilities, Development Services/Building Permits, and Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources. The individual will compare system transactions, receipts, deposits, credits, adjustments, and supporting documentation to confirm that funds received are complete, accurately recorded in the general ledger, and applied to the appropriate account, customer, permit, program, or revenue category. Duties & Responsibilities Reconcile daily cash and check receipts to system transactions, deposit records, and supporting documentation. Verify that receipts collected by departmental locations are complete and accurately recorded in the appropriate financial system and general ledger account. Reconcile receipt activity for multiple departments, including Utilities, Building Permits, and Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources. Research and resolve discrepancies involving missing or duplicate payments, incorrect credits, posting errors, deposit differences, and misapplied receipts. Review credits, adjustments, refunds, and other account activity to confirm that transactions are properly supported, authorized, and recorded. Confirm that utility payments and other departmental receipts are applied to the appropriate customer account, permit, program, or revenue category. Review payment receipts, deposit documentation, and other records for accuracy, completeness, and consistency. Coordinate with departmental staff to resolve payment, deposit, credit, and posting discrepancies. Process miscellaneous accounts-receivable transactions as assigned. Track invoices, outstanding balances, and collection activity. Review incoming mail and financial correspondence and determine whether payment processing, collection follow-up, a response, or another action is required. Maintain organized reconciliation workpapers and supporting documentation sufficient for management review and audit purposes. Identify recurring discrepancies or process concerns and communicate them to the appropriate supervisor. Qualifications Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy Experience with cash receipts, deposit reconciliation, account reconciliation, accounts receivable, and general ledger transactions. Ability to research and resolve transaction discrepancies Working knowledge of general-ledger activity and account coding Experience reviewing invoices, outstanding balances, and collection activity Strong organizational, documentation, and follow-through skills Ability to work independently while coordinating effectively with multiple departments Ability to handle financial information and supporting documentation appropriately Work Schedule The position will initially be primarily onsite, with approximately one remote workday per week. Based on demonstrated performance, reliability, and the ability to complete responsibilities independently, the schedule may later increase to two remote workdays per week. Physical Requirements Ability to communicate effectively through speaking and hearing. Visual acuity sufficient to read handwritten and electronic documents and work extensively on a computer.
