LEAD ELECTRICAL PROJECT ENGINEER / ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT LEAD

Mission

Responsible for leading and growing the electrical engineering department while maintaining hands-on involvement in the design and delivery of electrical engineering projects. This position provides technical leadership, project oversight, staff development, and quality control while serving as a senior electrical engineer on assigned projects.

The ideal candidate is capable of running the electrical department while continuing to perform engineering work, mentor staff, manage project execution, and serve as a trusted technical resource to clients, project managers, architects, contractors, and internal teams.

Responsibilities

Department Leadership & Management

• Lead the day-to-day operations of the electrical engineering department.

• Establish and maintain department standards, processes, design procedures, and quality-control practices.

• Manage department workload, staffing needs, project assignments, and resource planning.

• Mentor, train, and develop electrical engineering staff at various experience levels.

• Review staff performance and provide technical guidance, coaching, and professional development.

• Assist with recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding electrical engineering personnel.

• Identify opportunities to improve department efficiency, technical capabilities, and project delivery.

• Support development of department budgets, forecasts, and business goals.

• Work closely with company leadership and project managers to establish priorities and allocate resources.

• Help develop and maintain relationships with clients, architects, contractors, manufacturers, and other industry partners.

Engineering & Project Responsibilities

• Perform and oversee electrical engineering for assigned projects, including conceptual design, calculations, studies, system selection, and preparation of design and construction documents.

• Lead electrical design efforts from initial concept through construction administration.

• Develop electrical systems and solutions appropriate to project requirements, budgets, codes, and client expectations.

• Review and approve electrical engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and construction documents.

• Coordinate electrical system design with architectural, mechanical, structural, civil, and other engineering disciplines.

• Select and evaluate electrical equipment and systems.

• Provide technical leadership and direction to project engineers and designers.

• Participate in project meetings and serve as a senior technical representative of the electrical department.

• Assist project managers with project scope, schedules, budgets, and client communication.

• Perform or oversee construction administration activities, including submittal reviews, responses to RFIs, site observations, construction progress meetings, field reports, and punch lists.

• Investigate and resolve technical issues that arise during design and construction.

• Maintain awareness of applicable electrical codes, standards, industry practices, and emerging technologies.

• Utilize and promote BIM/Revit standards and best practices within the department.

Quality Assurance & Technical Leadership

• Establish and maintain department-wide quality standards for electrical design and documentation.

• Perform senior-level reviews of project deliverables prior to issuance.

• Identify design risks, coordination issues, and potential construction problems before they impact projects.

• Provide technical support on complex or challenging projects.

• Develop standard details, specifications, calculation methodologies, and design tools to improve consistency and efficiency.

• Ensure projects meet applicable codes, client requirements, company standards, schedules, and quality expectations.

Client & Business Development

• Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients.

• Participate in client meetings, presentations, interviews, and project pursuits.

• Assist with proposals, scopes of work, fee development, and project negotiations.

• Identify opportunities for additional services and future project work.

• Represent the company as a senior electrical engineering professional within the industry.

Reports To

• Company Leadership / Director of Engineering / Principal

• Works closely with Project Managers and other Department Leads

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline.

• 8–15+ years of demonstrated electrical engineering experience, preferably within the consulting engineering industry.

• Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred; candidates must be eligible to obtain a PE license within a reasonable timeframe.

• Strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles, codes, standards, and design practices.

• Proficiency with BIM/Revit and electrical engineering design software.

• Demonstrated experience leading electrical engineering projects and mentoring engineering staff.

• Experience with construction administration and field coordination.

• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and staff resources.

• Strong written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
