DEFINITION

Under the direction of the School Principal and in cooperation with the certificated teacher of record, perform a variety of instructional activities; assist in the planning and delivery of learning experiences; perform routine clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel; and perform other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

• Works in consultation with the certificated teacher of record to plan and deliver instructional activities in whole group, small group, and one-on-one settings.
• Reinforces instructional concepts taught by certificated teacher.
• Supports student behavior and engagement through the use of positive strategies and techniques.
• Prepares and assists in the preparation and organization of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids for use with individual students and/or groups of students.
• Maintains a variety of records and files, including confidential student records and information.
• Manages materials, programs, virtual learning platforms, and related technology and assists students and families in accessing them effectively.
• Administers and scores a variety of assessments and records results.
• Maintains an effective and positive learning environment.
• May participate in parent conferences and provide reports of student progress to staff and families as directed.
• Collaborates with District and site staff.
• Administers routine first aid and requests assistance for non-routine injury or illness.
• May assist in cleaning and changing children who have toileting needs.
• Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics;
• Student behavior management strategies and techniques;
• Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar;
• Basic mathematical concepts;
• Routine record management, storage, and retrieval systems and procedures.

Ability to:

• Engage students in strategic and effective instructional activities;
• Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups;
• Communicate effectively in oral and written form;
• Perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office related machines and equipment;
• Support the creation and maintenance of a positive learning environment;
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions provided by the classroom teacher(s) and/or school administrator(s);
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

• Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
• This type of work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve running, walking or standing for brief periods.
• Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far visual acuity, depth perception providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Experience:

One year of experience in an instructional capacity in a preschool or early childhood education program.

Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the following:

• Have obtained an Associate’s (or higher) Degree, or AS/AA in a related field with three (3) units of supervised field experience in an early childhood education setting, as listed under the Child Development and School-Age Emphasis Matrix; OR
• Have completed 24 ECE units including core courses, plus 16 general education units listed under the
  Child Development and School-Age Emphasis Matrix

Certificate Requirements:

• Hold a Child Development Teacher Permit.
• Possession of an up-to-date First Aid card issued by the American Red Cross, including CPR training.
