Supervising Inspector, Elevators

Responsibilities Assist the Assistant Chief Inspector in planning and coordinating activities within the Elevators Inspections unit of the Department of Buildings. Track and monitor DOB NOW inspections for complaints, application tests, overdue inspections, QA inspections, audits, and inspections under review. Monitor, assign, and review application signoffs, signoff requests, and review reports in DOB BUILD. Confer with architects, engineers, and equipment manufacturers on the interpretation of ordinances, standards, and codes. Perform joint inspections with inspectors and conduct special assignments when unusual conditions are encountered or mandated by operational requirements. Supervise, assign, and evaluate the work of inspectors. Review inspection and accident reports, formulate and supervise the preparation of in‑house training. Supervise the review, approval, and signoff of acceptance tests. Respond to public technical inquiries concerning elevator installation requirements and address technical issues related to the NYC Building Code revision. Prepare periodic reports, evaluations, and track QA compliance. Represent the Department at meetings and conferences with public and private agencies. Investigate new devices and consult with manufacturers, designers, and installers in collaboration with DOB technical staff. During field inspections, respond to, report, and investigate accidents, incidents, and complaints; issue violations, summonses, and stop‑work orders; and verify licenses of onsite workers. Explain and enforce laws and rules relevant to elevator inspections. Testify as needed at ECB hearings, depositions, and court proceedings. Study drawings to obtain details required for inspections. Maintain records and produce reports. Train subordinates in their duties. Operate a motor vehicle as required for the performance of assigned duties. Eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week under the Remote Work Pilot Program. Requirements Five years of full‑time experience in the assembly, installation, repair, or design of elevators; as a maintenance elevator machinist with recognized manufacturers; as a maintenance elevator mechanic on various standard makes; or as an elevator inspector. Three years of experience as described above, plus two years of formal training or education in an accredited college, technical school, or trade school in courses related to installation, repair, or design of elevators. Three years of experience as described above, plus sixty credits toward a degree in applied mechanics, mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering, or electrical engineering technology from an accredited college or university. Completion of an apprenticeship program (minimum three years) in the maintenance elevator mechanic trade or elevator inspection, plus either two years of experience as described in item 1, two years of education as described in item 2, or sixty credits as described in item 3. License as a professional engineer or registered architect issued pursuant to New York State Education Law. Education and/or experience equivalent to any of the above requirements. For Assignment Level II, non‑licensed individuals must also have at least one additional year of experience as described in item 1. For Assignment Level III, non‑licensed individuals must have, in addition to the requirements for Level II, at least one year of supervisory experience as described in item 1. #J-18808-Ljbffr Mission+
