Role Description We are looking for compassionate caregivers to be available as a Direct Care Worker (DCW). A Direct Care Worker (DCW) is a trained, paid professional who provides essential hands-on, non-medical (and sometimes basic clinical) support to older adults, individuals with chronic illnesses, and people with physical or developmental disabilities.The Direct Care Worker is a full-time, on-site role based in the Greater Phoenix Area. In this position, the team member provides hands-on support to individuals with developmental disabilities, assisting with daily living activities such as personal care, meal preparation, mobility, and hygiene. The role includes implementing habilitation plans, supporting skill development, accompanying individuals to community activities or appointments, and helping maintain a safe, respectful environment. Direct Care Workers document services provided, communicate observations and changes in client condition to supervisors, and collaborate closely with families and other care providers. The position requires consistent adherence to agency policies, client rights, and health and safety standards while fostering dignity, independence, and inclusion. Capacity to maintain client safety, including observing for changes in condition, responding calmly in emergencies, and following health and safety guidelines. High level of professionalism, integrity, dependability, and compassion in working with individuals with developmental disabilities. Ability to work on-site in the Greater Phoenix Area, including potentially flexible hours, evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed. General Job Duties Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) Personal Hygiene: Assisting clients with bathing, showering, grooming, shaving, oral care, and dressing. Toileting Care: Providing restroom assistance, incontinence care, and help with bowel/bladder routines. Mobility Support: Helping clients transfer between beds, chairs, and wheelchairs; assisting with walking, ambulating, and physical exercises. Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) Meal Preparation: Planning and cooking healthy meals according to the client’s specific prescribed dietary restrictions, and providing feeding assistance if needed. Light Housekeeping: Maintaining a clean and safe living environment by performing laundry, dusting, vacuuming, washing dishes, and taking out the trash. Errands and Transportation: Escorting clients to medical appointments, running grocery errands, and assisting with community or social outings. Health Monitoring & Care Coordination Medication Management: Providing timely medication reminders, assisting with self-administered treatments, and monitoring for visible side effects. Observation & Reporting: Tracking the client’s physical condition, cognitive status, or behavioral shifts and immediately reporting changes to supervisors, family members, or healthcare professionals. Emotional and Social Support Companionship: Actively listening, conversing, playing games, and engaging clients in meaningful social activities to prevent isolation and loneliness. Employers and families expect DCWs to uphold high professional standards due to the vulnerable nature of the population they serve. Reliability and Punctuality: Clients rely heavily on their workers for basic daily survival. Showing up on time and consistently completing shifts is a critical requirement. Compassion and Empathy: Maintaining an objective awareness of others, utilizing a high degree of patience, and interacting with clients in a dignified, respectful manner. Autonomy and Integrity: The ability to work independently in a client’s home without direct, immediate supervision while strictly doing the right thing, preserving client rights, and adhering to care plans. Strict Confidentiality & Compliance: Respecting client privacy laws (like HIPAA) and knowing the legal mandates for reporting suspected client abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Physical Capability: The position is physically demanding, requiring the ability to stand for long periods and safely lift or transfer clients (often up to 50-100 lbs depending on the agency). Common Training & Qualifications Before Starting you must have: A High School Diploma or GED. Ability to pass a background check and obtain a current fingerprint clearance card. First Aid and CPR certifications. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license. MINIMUM 3 months prior caregiving experience After starting you must obtain: State Competency Training: DCWs are often expected to complete specific state-mandated training and pass standard competency tests within 90 days of hire, and to maintain 6 hours of continued educational materials annually.
