Curator II (3542) - Applied Design Program Manager - Randall Museum - SF Recreation & Parks

Job Overview The Randall Museum’s Applied Design Program Manager is responsible for overall administration of the museum’s carpentry shop, Technology FabLab, and ceramics studio, as well as playing a major role in new exhibit construction and maintenance. Responsibilities Plan and manage quarterly classes and occasional workshops, coaching instructors on syllabi, classroom management, and efficient materials use. Support all museum programs when applicable. Build and maintain permanent and changing exhibits, including planning, preparation, and installation of new museum exhibits. Oversee operations in the woodshop, ceramics studio, and FabLab, managing materials, supplies, equipment maintenance, and communication with the Museum Director. Administer an annual budget for the Applied Technology Program, contract with city vendors for supplies and equipment, and coordinate with maintenance staff and outside contractors for shop or exhibit improvements. Supervise part‑time instructors and recreation staff, setting standards, priorities, and scheduling work for staff and volunteers. Develop and teach training programs for staff and volunteers. Conduct public programming in applied technology for adults and teens, such as woodworking, ceramics, metal working, electronics, robotics, optics, and electronic arts. Maintain equipment and materials safety records and conduct mandatory safety training classes. Assist with museum‑wide events, designing, constructing, and installing bi‑annual museum exhibits, and preparing activities for family day events. Represent the museum at department events and community venues, providing information about activities and collections. Partner with government agencies, foundations, and individuals to develop applied arts programs and coordinate youth work programs for training and employment opportunities. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, major coursework in fine arts, art history, design, museum studies, science, technology, or related disciplines. Three (3) years of museum experience. Preferred: major coursework in science, engineering, industrial arts, electronics, or related subject matter. Three years of experience designing and implementing multi‑session applied arts classes. Experience in exhibit design, graphic design, industrial design, fabrication, STEM education or similar professional experience. Four years of supervisory experience with museum, education, or recreation staff. Demonstrated cultural competency and effective educational practice for diverse learners. Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Proficiency in graphic design, technical drawing, or illustration. Experience working with young learners.
