Cardiac First Assist

The Cardiac First Assist works under the supervision of the attending physician to provide support during cardiac surgical procedures. Responsibilities include aiding in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other technical functions that contribute to the safety and success of the operation. The role also encompasses preoperative and postoperative duties to better support the surgical patient throughout the perioperative period.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in cardiac surgical procedures as a 1st or 2nd assist.
• Perform preoperative and postoperative duties to facilitate patient needs.
• Provide coverage for regional call in support of the cardiac surgery program, as well as assist in transplant duties, requiring travel by car, ambulance, plane, or helicopter.
• Adhere to all policies and standards related to patient care and safety.
• Engage in annual training and comply with the requirements for maintaining Protected Health Information (PHI).
• Participate in additional duties as assigned by the department.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an approved Surgical Assistant Program is required.
• Less than 1 year of experience taking Second Call for a cardiac service line is required.
• National certification from one of the following is preferred:
  • National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA)
  • American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA)

Health and Background Requirements

• Completion of appropriate vaccinations, including MMR, Hepatitis B, Varicella, Tdap, and Influenza.
• Successful completion of a Fit Test and a Physical/Health Statement.
• Pass a drug screen prior to onboarding.
• Clearance from criminal background checks and verification of prior employment.

Unit Description

This role takes place within an advanced cardiac surgery center, where a variety of state-of-the-art surgeries are performed. The Cardiac First Assist team has the opportunity to gain extensive experience in areas such as coronary procedures, valve replacements, transplant surgeries, robotic operations, and various interventions for structural heart disease.
