Patient Access Rep II

Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital

Overview BJC is looking for a Patient Access Rep II in our therapy department at our St. Peters location. Part Time Position – 24 hours per week. Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, 8:30am – 5pm. Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital proudly serves the health care needs of families in St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren counties. The 102-bed community hospital provides inpatient and outpatient services including the Siteman Cancer Center, the Breast Health and Women’s Center, the Cardiology Center, the Neurosurgery Center and the Outpatient Surgery and Endoscopy Center. The hospital is an Accredited Chest Pain Center and carries a Level II stroke certification. The medical office building houses offices for specialists in primary care, cardiology, obstetrics, dermatology, surgery and pulmonology. Outpatient services include physical therapy, a sleep lab, and cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation. At Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, every decision is made in the best interest of patients and families. The Therapy Departments provide inpatient services including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology. Role Purpose The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for our patients and must represent BJC with the highest standard of customer service, compassion, and alignment with our mission, vision, values and service standards. This role facilitates all components of the patient's entrance into any BJC facility. A high level of emotional intelligence and personal connection is required. Patient experiences vary based on medical needs and acuity. This role impacts reimbursement accuracy and denials prevention through collecting demographics and insurance information, benefit verification, and point-of-service collection. Selecting the correct patient from the master patient index (MPI) is critical to patient safety. The team member must possess a friendly demeanor, exceptional attention to detail, and up-to-date knowledge of insurance carriers, Medicare guidelines, and federal, state, and accreditation requirements. Responsibilities The responsibilities of this position include hospital registration and scheduling within multiple BJC systems. Ensure proper patient identification, register and schedule, verify insurance, scan and retrieve documents within multiple BJC systems. Validate that the order is complete, signed by the ordering provider, and the correct test is ordered. Provide clear preparation instructions for each scheduled procedure, education on financial responsibilities, and collection of applicable patient payments. Comply with complex regulatory guidelines by understanding, articulating, and enforcing hospital compliance with Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP), HIPAA Privacy Standards, Patient Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO requirements. Each patient completes HIPAA acknowledgement. This position requires independent thinking to solve complex issues. Utilize critical thinking to assess and respond to varying situations, anticipate patients’ needs, and communicate professionally with patients, families, and co-workers in person or by phone. This role aims to ensure a positive patient experience, maximize reimbursements, minimize denials and write-offs, and maintain the integrity of the patient’s clinical and financial records by correctly selecting from the MPI. Working independently, this team member will consistently meet or exceed quality standards and may mentor lesser-skilled employees. BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
