Job SummaryThe Vice President of Development & Marketing provides strategic leadership for Hanna Center’s marketing, communications, development alignment, grant strategy and management, and community engagement efforts. This role is responsible for expanding Hanna’s visibility, strengthening institutional positioning, and driving diversified revenue through integrated marketing, grant funding, community-based support, and recreation programs and facility use.
This leader oversees the full lifecycle of grants, including prospecting, proposal development, compliance, reporting, and stewardship, ensuring alignment with programmatic priorities and organizational strategy. In addition, the VP leads grassroots fundraising efforts, donor communications for entry- and mid-level donors, and community partnership development.
As a key member of the executive team, the VP aligns messaging, brand visibility, grant funding strategy, and community partnerships to support program growth, donor pipeline development, and long-term sustainability. This role works closely with the Director of Development to ensure alignment across all revenue streams and external engagement functions.
Essential Functions
Recreation & Campus Activation
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight of recreation programs, including camps (e.g., summer camps), youth and community recreation for both program participants and non-participants
- Oversee the planning, growth, and quality of recreation programming to enhance community engagement and mission alignment
- Lead the development and management of facility rentals, including athletic fields and campus spaces, as an earned revenue strategy
- Ensure recreation programs and facility use are aligned with organizational priorities, safety standards, and community needs
- Collaborate with program and operations teams to integrate recreation opportunities across Residential Programs, Mental Health Hub, and Hanna Academy
- Establish performance metrics for recreation participation, revenue generation, and community impact
Strategic Leadership
- Serve as a member of the executive leadership team, contributing to organizational strategy, planning, and performance
- Develop and execute integrated strategies across marketing, grants, and community development aligned with organizational goals
- Partner cross-functionally with program and development leaders to align external engagement with programmatic priorities and funding opportunities
- Contribute to long-term revenue diversification strategy, including philanthropic, grant, and community-based funding streams
Marketing & Communications
- Develop and execute a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy that elevates Hanna’s visibility, brand, and community impact
- Oversee digital communications, including social media, website content strategy, email marketing, and storytelling
- Direct brand management and ensure consistent, mission-aligned messaging across all platforms
- Lead crisis communications strategy and execution in partnership with senior leadership
- Collaborate across departments to develop programmatic and institutional collateral materials
Grants Strategy & Management
- Lead and manage the full grants lifecycle, including prospect research, proposal development, submission, and stewardship
- Oversee grant compliance, reporting, and documentation in alignment with funder requirements and organizational standards
- Collaborate with program leaders to develop compelling grant proposals aligned with program outcomes and funding priorities
- Monitor grant performance, deliverables, and reporting timelines to ensure compliance and funding continuity
- Build and maintain relationships with institutional funders, including foundations, government agencies, and corporate partners
- Develop systems and infrastructure to track grant opportunities, submissions, awards, and outcomes
- Align grant strategy with broader development and organizational revenue goals
Community Development & Grassroots Fundraising
- Lead donor communications and grassroots fundraising campaigns
- Oversee stewardship of small and mid-level donors to encourage retention and long-term engagement
- Build and sustain strong community partnerships, representing Hanna at events, coalitions, and public forums
- Expand community-based fundraising and engagement opportunities
Collaboration with Development
- Partner closely with the Director of Development to ensure cohesive messaging, donor pipeline alignment, and revenue strategy across all giving levels
- Collaborate on event strategy, communications, and donor engagement
Financial & Administrative Oversight
- Develop and manage departmental budgets across marketing, grants, and community development functions
- Establish annual goals, KPIs, and performance metrics; monitor progress and adjust strategies as needed
- Supervise staff, consultants, and external partners
Manages Marketing & Communications team members, grants staff and Development personnel, community programming, facility rentals, outreach, donor engagement, grassroots fundraising, and digital content.

This position operates primarily on-site and within community settings. Regular participation in meetings, donor engagement, community programming, and events is required. Evening and weekend work is expected in support of events and community activities.
Physical Demands- Ability to remain seated or standing for extended periods
- Ability to travel locally for meetings, events, and community engagement
- Occasional lifting of materials up to 20 pounds
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred
- Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit development, marketing, communications, grants management, or community engagement
- Demonstrated success securing and managing grants from foundations, corporations, and government agencies
- Experience developing and implementing strategic marketing and communications initiatives
- Proven experience leading fundraising campaigns, donor engagement strategies, and community partnerships
- Supervisory and team leadership experience required, including cross-functional collaboration and staff development
- Strong project management, organizational, and budget management skills
- Experience using CRM and donor management systems (e.g., Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, Bloomerang, or similar platforms) preferred
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills required
- Experience working with diverse populations and trauma-informed or youth-serving organizations preferred
Clear background check, pre-employment drug screening, and TB test
Certified or ability to become certified in CPR, First Aid, and Community Water Safety
Valid California driver’s license with the ability to become insured under company policy
