Medical Laboratory Scientist II

Summary The Medical Laboratory Scientist II, in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform waived and non‑waived testing. Under general supervision, they carry out all policies and perform all tests in accordance with the department's standard operating procedures. They work independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records. The position requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret test results used by providers in diagnosing and treating diseases. The Medical Laboratory Scientist II may also serve as a General Supervisor, overseeing day‑to‑day laboratory operations, quality control review, training, competency assessment, and inventory management. Essential Functions After successful completion of orientation, training, and competency assessment on all instruments/methods applicable to their role. Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results. Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples. Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies; document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed. Follow the laboratory's established corrective‑action policies whenever test systems are not within acceptable performance levels. Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting and either correct the problems or notify the appropriate supervisor or director. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from performance specifications. Education • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or Laboratory Sciences, or any other certificate/diploma in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Licenses and Credentials Medical Technologist (ASCP) – Board of Certification (ASCP‑BOC) required (MT, MLT, MLA, Histologist). Experience Lab experience of 1–2 years required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Understanding of laboratory equipment, operation, maintenance, repair, and analytical techniques. Ability to work independently, evaluate situations, and act appropriately. Multi‑tasking in a fast‑paced environment. Attention to detail and adherence to written protocols, including communication with supervisors when issues arise. Team‑player with excellent interpersonal skills. Professional communication with physicians, hospital personnel, employees, and patients. Basic knowledge of federal, state, and accreditation requirements.
