Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Surgical Acute - Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Active Illinois RN License or confirmation that the application process has been initiated Certifications: BLS Must-Have: Post-operative care of patients Critical thinking skills Good bedside manner Team player Description: The unit consists of 63 beds, including 49 private and 9 observation beds. Patient ratios for nurses are 4-5 during the day shift and 5-6 during the night shift. Common diagnoses include post-operative surgical cases, trauma, overflow medical conditions, and require dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drainage management, NG tube care, central line care, and TPN. There is a Charge Nurse on each shift, who does not take an assignment. House supervisors are available 24/7. Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) assist with patient care, with ratios of 7-10 patients per PCT on days and 10-15 patients per PCT on nights. The registered nurses manage inhalers and can place patients on CPAP but do not manage ventilators. Telemetry monitoring is available; however, bedside nurses do not read rhythms, as monitor techs manage this from a central station. Shifts run from 0700-1930 for days and 1930-0730 for nights. Every other weekend is required, with rotation for holidays. Traveling nurses may float to units with the same level of experience, and if floating from ICU to a general unit, they will manage a team of 3 patients. Scrubs can be any color. Orientation includes two shifts with a preceptor and one additional shift for system training and professional orientation.
