Primary Purpose Registered Dental Hygienists receive an adjunct appointment in the College of Dental Medicine. Assist with the clinical and didactic training of dental students under the direction of the Director of Dental Hygiene and other faculty of the Section of Periodontology. Temporary employment is of limited duration, and under the terms of NSU’s benefits plan and policies, not eligible for company benefits. Essential Job Functions Assist in directing of dental hygiene-related education, including didactic/clinical sessions. Instruct students in periodontal instrumentation techniques, soft tissue management, calculus detection and removal, ergonomics, infection control, patient education, and instrument sharpening. Establish appropriate recall intervals for Preventive Maintenance Therapy in conjunction with faculty Periodontists. Grade dental students on performance of scaling and root planning, oral hygiene instruction, preventive maintenance treatments, infection control and professionalism. Assist in the maintenance of equipment and instruments according to OSHA and state regulations. Assist in preparation of necessary documents for accreditation agencies. Be able to respond to emergency situations and implement emergency procedures. Assist in the reporting of the progress of the program to the Chair and interact with the Chair regarding overall educational goals. Job Requirements Excellent Computer skills to support learning and using the CDM’s electronic dental records. Strong periodontal skills with working knowledge of ultrasonic instrumentation. Flexible schedule with per half day sessions. Excellent communication skills and ability to explain complexity in a simple way. Must be a team player. Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of periodontal disease assessment and treatment. Knowledge of state and OSHA rules and regulations regarding infection control and sterilization procedures. General knowledge of medications related to dentistry. Proficiency in dental anatomy and pathology with ability to recognize lesions that warrant a consultation from an Oral Pathologist. Familiarity with medical conditions that may interfere with dental treatment. Required Certifications/Licensures Active Dental Hygiene License from the State of Florida. Required Education Associates degree or higher in Dental Hygiene from an accredited institution. Major (if required: Required Experience Two years of experience as a Dental Hygienist subsequent to graduation. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree Teaching experience in a Dental Hygiene program 5 or more years as a R.D.H. working with digital records and computer systems Is this a safety sensitive position?
