About the Role
The Company is seeking a Deputy General Counsel to join its Office of General Counsel. The successful candidate will be a senior member of the legal team, providing key advice on a wide range of legal matters, including staff employment, tort liability, student issues, athletics, research and sponsored programs, and data privacy and security. This role requires the ability to manage a demanding practice, exercise sound legal judgment, and communicate effectively with colleagues and clients. The Deputy General Counsel will be responsible for handling significant and complex legal matters and transactions, as well as providing timely legal advice to various university divisions. Applicants must have a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school, be licensed to practice law in the State of South Carolina, or be eligible for licensure, and have a minimum of 5 years of recent legal experience. A strong background in areas such as drafting and negotiating agreements, civil litigation, employment, research and sponsored programs, Division 1 college athletics, and/or privacy laws is essential. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of the legal, academic, and operational issues relevant to a liberal arts institution, with experience in a college or university general counsel's office being strongly preferred. The role demands strong research, analytical, and communication skills, as well as the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a high-pressure, dynamic environment.
