Role Description The Traffic Signal Engineer is a full‑time, on‑site role based in New Orleans, LA, responsible for planning, designing, and maintaining traffic signal systems to improve safety and traffic flow across the city. Day‑to‑day tasks include analyzing traffic patterns, developing signal timing plans, and implementing signal coordination strategies along key corridors. The role involves reviewing and preparing engineering drawings and specifications, overseeing installation and maintenance of signal equipment, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal standards. The Traffic Signal Engineer will collaborate with transportation planners, field technicians, contractors, and other city departments, and will respond to operational issues, conduct field inspections, and support data‑driven improvements to the city’s transportation network. Minimum Qualifications

EITHER:

Five (5) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of urban traffic control systems, including maintenance troubleshooting, repair and installation of electro‑mechanical and electronic controllers and related equipment. At least three (3) years of this experience must have been at a supervisory level. OR: A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial Engineering or a closely related field* AND two (2) years of professional or sub‑professional engineering experience in traffic engineering. Skills Strong knowledge of traffic signalling and signal engineering principles, including design, timing, and operations. Experience with rail transport and railway signalling concepts, especially where multimodal coordination is required. Familiarity with Communications‑based Train Control (CBTC) or similar advanced control systems is beneficial. Proficiency with traffic engineering tools and software (e.g., signal timing and simulation programs) and relevant standards (MUTCD, ITE guidelines). Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field; professional engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure is an advantage. Ability to interpret engineering plans, conduct field inspections, and manage multiple projects with attention to detail and safety. Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse internal and external stakeholders. Experience with urban traffic operations, ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems), or public sector transportation projects is preferred. #J-18808-Ljbffr City of New Orleans
