School Resource Officer

Mission It is the mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation. Job Purpose Under general supervision, serves as the initial law enforcement responder and school safety coordinator for campus emergencies. Provides security for special school events, assists investigators, escorts unauthorized visitors, establishes partnership with school administrators, and enforces state and department policies. Job Responsibilities Serve as School Resource Officer responding to and resolving calls for service. Perform law enforcement duties by patrolling DJJ campuses to ensure safety, search for and apprehend AWOLs, assist units in controlling youth disturbances, and notify management. Conduct routine patrols of assigned campuses, including buildings and parking lots. Serve as the initial law enforcement first responder and school safety coordinator for campus emergencies. Provide security for special school events or functions such as sporting events. Prepare shift reports and other records. Operate communication network and vehicles. Ensure that vehicles and equipment are properly maintained. Transport youth as deemed necessary. Investigate escapes and vehicle accidents occurring on agency property. Conduct other investigations such as drugs, theft, contraband, and youth abuse. Assist other law enforcement officers with outside investigations concerning students attending the school. Escort unauthorized, unruly visitors, or terminated employees off DJJ campuses. Establish and maintain a close partnership with school administrators to provide a safe school environment. Perform other related job duties deemed necessary by the Director of Public Safety and/or the Inspector General. Minimum Requirements High school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with 23‑23‑40 of the SC Code of Laws of 1976. Bachelor's degree may be substituted for required law enforcement experience. Additional Requirements Knowledge of state laws to ensure protection and security of persons and property of all DJJ facilities. Knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques and procedures; evidence collection and preservation; legal rights; functions and interrelationships of SC DJJ. Skilled in operation of LE vehicles, weapons, and communications equipment; ability to evaluate situations and make decisions; ability to deal firmly yet tactfully with the general public; reading, writing, and understanding materials. Ability to provide classroom instruction on topics such as narcotics, safety, relationship skills, de‑escalation techniques, conflict resolution, and responsible decision making. Must be able to work with aggressive delinquent youth daily in accordance with SC DJJ policies and procedures. Must be able to lift 50+ lbs.; sit 1‑3 hrs/day; stand 1‑3 hrs/day; walk 1‑3 hrs/day; work varied hours; travel overnight occasionally. Deal with confidential and sensitive information; prioritize multiple competing priorities during high‑stress situations. Training applicable to duties will be provided. Preferred Qualifications Current SC CJA Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer and School Resource Officer Certification from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
