Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Inpatient Rehabilitation/Orthopedics Duration: 6 weeks Shift: 12-hour Days Hours per Shift: 7 AM - 7 PM Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Not specified Certifications: BLS Certification Must-Have: Ortho experience preferred Telemetry experience Ability to perform IVs, foley catheter placements, and dressing changes Description: The unit has 9 beds dedicated to Orthopedics and 13 beds for Inpatient Rehabilitation. If the medical-surgical census does not support, the individual may be assigned rehabilitation patients. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4 for medical-surgical patients and 1:6 for rehabilitation patients. These ratios are frequently adjusted based on the level of care required by the patients and are reviewed twice daily during staffing meetings. Common diagnoses include total knee, hip, and shoulder replacements, cerebrovascular accidents, encephalopathy, and lumbar fusions. The unit also accepts "clean" medical-surgical patients when bed needs necessitate. Registered Nurses are not required to titrate drips. There is a Charge Nurse present on both units for each shift, and they take patient assignments. Patient Care Technicians are assigned to assist with activities of daily living and vital signs. There are times when nursing staff may provide primary care due to urgent needs or staffing shortages. Registered Nurses are responsible for troubleshooting respiratory therapy equipment, while respiratory therapists manage treatment setups. Telemetry patients are monitored off-site by technicians. Registered Nurses are required to complete a basic rhythm course for strip reading. Shifts do not allow self-scheduling, but efforts are made to provide some flexibility in scheduling. Every other weekend is required, and holidays are rotated to allow staff to spend time with their families. If census is low, staff will either remain on the unit or may float to a similar unit with greater nursing needs. Floating will only be to units with similar staffing ratios. Navy blue scrubs are mandatory, and scrubs are not provided by the department. There are three days of classroom orientation followed by two precepted shifts on the floor.
