Stony Brook University: Health Sciences: School of Dental Medicine: Oral Biology and Pathology Deadline Jul 16, 2026 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time Description The School of Dental Medicine (SDM) at Stony Brook University is seeking a full‑time, 12‑month tenure‑track or tenured faculty appointment at the rank of assistant or associate professor in the Department of Oral Biology and Pathology, with expertise in dental biomaterials research. The successful candidate will: 1) contribute to the biomaterials curriculum for dental students and graduate programs; 2) secure internal and external funding to support research; 3) demonstrate a continued record of scholarship; 4) supervise dental students, residents and MS/PhD research projects; and 5) participate in school governance. The position will focus on collaborating with clinicians to assess treatment protocols, creating and testing commercial products, and developing next‑generation dental biomaterials. The SDM is constructing a dental biomaterials research laboratory that this appointment will oversee. The lab will be accessible to all SDM departments, enabling multidisciplinary research and graduate‑level student projects. Responsibilities Teach biomaterials-related courses for dental students and graduate programs. Develop and maintain grant proposals and secure funding from governmental and private sources. Supervise undergraduate, dental student, resident, and graduate (MS/PhD) research projects. Collaborate with clinicians and researchers on laboratory assessment of treatment protocols. Lead the design, creation, and testing of commercial biomaterials products. Oversee the construction, equipping, and operation of the new biomaterials research laboratory. Participate in departmental and school governance activities. Qualifications Required Qualifications PhD (or foreign equivalent) in biomaterials science from an accredited institution. Postdoctoral training. Active NIH funding. Evidence of collaborative biomaterials research. Record of scholarship in relevant journals. Teaching experience with professional or graduate students in the last five years. Mentoring experience with professional or graduate students in the last five years. Preferred Qualifications Teaching experience at a dental or medical school. Experience serving on an NIH study section. Engaged member of IADR/AADOCR Dental Material Interest Groups. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills. A desire to create a collegial environment. Background Investigation The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.
