Tech III Maintenance Mechanic — Job Description

Position Summary: The Tech III Maintenance Mechanic is a senior-level industrial technician responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining all production and processing equipment in a food manufacturing facility. This role requires advanced mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and refrigeration knowledge, with the ability to work independently, lead technical decisions, and support production during high-pressure situations.

Key Responsibilities

• Advanced troubleshooting of batch freezers, pasteurizers, homogenizers, pumps, valves, conveyors, and utility systems.
• Perform complex mechanical repairs including rebuilds of pumps, gearboxes, valves, motors, and mechanical assemblies.
• Diagnose electrical issues up to 480V (motors, contactors, VFDs, sensors, relays).
• Read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and OEM manuals.
• Execute preventive maintenance on all processing and packaging equipment.
• Lead equipment changeovers and ensure proper setup for production runs.
• Support CIP/Sanitation troubleshooting for valves, pumps, and flow paths.
• Identify root causes of downtime and implement corrective actions.
• Train Tech I and Tech II staff on equipment operation and maintenance.
• Document all work in with accurate parts usage and repair notes.
• Maintain GMP compliance and ensure equipment meets food safety standards.
• Coordinate with production to minimize downtime and optimize line performance.
• Perform emergency repairs during breakdowns with minimal supervision.

Required Skills & Experience

• 5–10 years industrial maintenance experience in food, beverage, dairy, or cold processing.
• Expert mechanical skills: pumps, valves, motors, bearings, gearboxes, alignment.
• Strong electrical knowledge: VFDs, PLC inputs/outputs, sensors, 3-phase motors.
• Ability to read schematics, and OEM manuals without assistance.
• Strong understanding of hydraulics and pneumatics.
• Ability to work independently and make technical decisions.
• Strong communication skills for coordinating with production and QA.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

• Ability to lift 50+ lbs.
• Work in cold, wet, or hot environments as needed.
• Stand, bend, climb, and work in tight spaces.
• Work overtime, weekends, and on-call shifts when required.
