Managing Director, O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law - Georgetown University.


Working with the Executive Director and Faculty Director, the Managing Director will provide operational and administrative management, as well as support overall strategic leadership in support of the Center's work. The Managing Director will meet these responsibilities by managing the operations team (including overall financial and grant management, program coordination, and administrative support), overseeing human resources, finance, communications, and outreach. Working with the Faculty Director and Executive Director, the Managing Director will help provide medium and long-range planning for the Center, including ensuring the financial resources required to sustain staff and operations. The Managing Director will work with the Executive Director and Faculty Director to develop and implement strategic financial planning that ensures the Center's long-term financial viability. This position requires rigorous stewardship of the Institute's programs, activities, and finances. In addition, the Managing Director supervises 7 Center Directors, and also engages in independent scholarly activities, including research and writing, lecturing, and occasional teaching, as appropriate.

The Managing Director will lend expertise to a wide variety of national and global health opportunities and provide strategic direction for center operations. The managing director will build relationships with key stakeholders within Georgetown and externally.


Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

• Institution management
• Institution-Building
• Financial oversight
• Management of student relationships: development and fostering of relationships with health law J.D. and LL.M students
• Write Center reports, including an annual report, to disseminate to key stakeholders
• Provide mentorship, coaching, and support to staff and students.

Work Interactions

Working closely with the Institute's Faculty Director, the Managing Director will work to establish the Institute (or maintain the Institute's reputation) as the leading local, national, and global voice in and convener of discussions and debates about health policy; and supervise many of the day-to-day functions of Institute staff, fellows, and students.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Possess a J.D., Ph.D., M.D., MBA or terminal degree.
• At least seven years of senior or executive leadership experience.
• Skilled in financial oversight and budgeting.
• Demonstrated expertise in program building and management, sponsored research, and academic administration.
• An innovative thinker in possession of independent judgment, accountability, impeccable integrity, sense of fairness, and expert experience in interactions with a diverse range of people and interests. The Institute seeks an individual who thrives in a team environment.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills to interact effectively with academic leaders, faculty, staff, donors and volunteers.

• Excellent communication skills to express, both orally and in writing, the mission of the Institute, its values, objectives, and its fundraising goals.
• Strong business and people management capabilities with a focus on results, including experience with human resources / talent management and financial planning / budget design.

Preferred Qualifications

• Candidates with expertise and additional training in medicine, political science, economics, public health, social determinants of health, bioethics, or related disciplines.
• Possess excellent communication, organizational, financial, and leadership skills
• Be able to take initiative, implement vision, resolve problems, and advance the mission and vision of the Institute
• Have experience and expertise collaborating with government agencies, international organizations, civil society or think tank partners
• Have successful experience in programming and convening both high-level and more localized events (such as roundtables, colloquia, and symposia)
• Have knowledge of leading scholars, authors, and researchers in the field to build partnerships and collaborations
• Have both national and global experience and will have previously served on a 501c3 board or boards, with an understanding of fiduciary responsibilities, organizational governance, delegation of responsibilities, and working with others in leadership

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$103,723.00 - $202,778.93

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
