RN Transport Specialist - Pediatric/Neonatal Transport Team - Nights (Open)

Provides professional nursing care for patients in the clinical setting. Provides leadership to nursing staff members, and collaborates with other members of the health care team to assure quality care for the Patients. Promotes, plans, directs, and implements medical management and safe transportation for critically ill/injured infant or child, in consultation with the attending physician. Maintains standards of professional nursing practice.

The RN Transport Specialist:

• Maintains mission readiness at all times.
• Ensures safety for self, vehicle, patient, transport team, and community during all phases of transport.
• Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates delivery of nursing care in accordance with the medical plan of care, nursing practice standards, nursing care standards, and policy and procedures in order to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages.
• Collaborates with other transport team members to ensure the safety of all transport operations. Provides rapid assessment, emergency measures and transportation for the critically ill/injured infant or child, utilizing the latest technique and state of the art equipment.
• Uses situational monitoring to assess and reassess patient needs and modifies care based on changing clinical conditions.
• Participates in chart review processes and provides constructive feedback to peers.
• Adheres to regional EMS protocols, state and federal regulations, CAMTS requirements, Virginia OEMS standards, and Carilion Clinic policies and procedures.
• Completes required training, education, and competency validations within established timeframes.
• Acquires and maintains advanced neonatal skills such as intubation, ventilation, insertion of UAC/UVC's, and chest needle aspirations or chest tube insertion. Maintains all required certifications, licenses, and continuing education.
• Assists with training, mentoring, and onboarding of team members.
• Participates in public relations and community outreach activities, including presentations on operations, safety, and clinical capabilities.
• Applies evidence-based practice and clinical protocols in patient care.
• Delivers clinical care that meets established quality, safety, and documentation standards.
• Provides lead supervision to professional and nonprofessional staff. Frequent direct contact and communication within and outside the Carilion Clinic with patients, families, physicians, nurses, EMS personnel, aviation personnel, administrators, and the general public. Some communication and coordination with community agencies.
• Transport work is performed under high tension and sometimes-adverse conditions due to the critical nature and location of the patients. Moderate physical effort is required for frequent moving and lifting of transport equipment. Requires substantial walking and standing. Frequently uses mechanical devices. High risk of danger involved in working in and around an aircraft and on an ambulance.
• Physical requirements include weight restrictions, good general health, and high tolerance to stress.
• Productive utilization of downtime within Carilion Children's is required. This may be in the form of attending patient emergent events, trauma alerts in the Peds ED, assistance with neonatal and pediatric procedures, and attendance at unit huddles and interdisciplinary rounds.

What We Require:

• Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing is required. BSN preferred.
• Experience: Minimum of 3 years of critical care (NICU or Pediatric ICU) experience. Critical care experience is defined as no less than 4000 hours of experience in a NICU/Pediatric ICU.
• Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration: Must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Additional state licensure may be required depending on base location.
• Currently licensed as Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. BLS required.
• As of 01/01/19 C-NPT (Certified Neonatal Pediatric Transport) is required within 2 years of hire. Must obtain EMT-B within six months of hire and maintain. Must obtain EVOC, NRP, and Haz-Mat Awareness within twelve months of hire and maintain. Must meet and maintain FAA and aviation vendor requirements for flight crew eligibility.
• Must maintain a driving record in compliance with CCPT Driver Safety Policy and Carilion Risk Management standards.
• Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP and ACLS must be completed and maintained. PALS and TNCC or ATLS (audit) must be obtained and maintained as required.
• Other Minimum Qualifications: Must demonstrate proficiency in advanced physical and psychosocial assessment skills required for care of critically ill patients. Must demonstrate strong critical thinking, assessment, communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills. Must be able to perform effectively in high-stress, rapidly changing environments including emergency scenes, rotor-wing aircraft, ground ambulances, indoor facilities, and outdoor settings. Must be able to tolerate flight-related physiologic stressors, including those described in the USAF "9 stresses of flight."

Compensation Range:

$36.87 - $55.31

Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
