Adjunct Lecturer in Law - Counterterrorism, Privacy and Civil Liberties for LLM Students

Course Overview LAW 866 Counterterrorism, Privacy and Civil Liberties for LLM Students (2 units) This class focuses on the legal and policy issues arising from the U.S. government's domestic security efforts post-9/11, including the detection and prevention of attacks or espionage on the U.S. homeland by foreign and domestic terrorists, foreign nations, criminal organizations or other hostile groups. The course covers threat analysis, border and transportation security, NSA and FBI surveillance and counterterrorism activities, immigration enforcement, efforts to counter violent extremism and radicalization, detention of terrorism suspects, and cybersecurity, including discussion of foreign meddling in elections. Topics addressed vary each year to reflect current societal issues. Requirements JD degree. At least five years of practical legal experience, including experience in counterterrorism, privacy, civil liberties, or related subject matter. Teaching experience preferred. Instructor must be a local resident to teach on campus. Appointment & Training USC reserves the adjunct appointment for faculty who teach less than full‑time and are employed full‑time in a primary profession or career elsewhere. Adjunct faculty typically teach one course per year, but may teach one course per semester if approved by the dean. Adjunct lecturers are required to complete mandated training by the required deadline. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination, in accordance with the Faculty Handbook. Mandatory trainings include: Harassment Prevention Training at hire and every two years thereafter. Integrity and Accountability Code Training at hire. Information Security training annually. Workplace Violence Prevention Plan training annually. Other trainings may be required based on specific job responsibilities. Compensation Base salary range: $2,433.66 – $9,984.65 per semester.
