The Mother-Baby Unit (MBU) is a 24-bed postpartum unit providing couplet care for mothers and newborns, as well as low-risk antepartum patients. Our MBU nursing staff, obstetrical hospitalists, and neonatologists offer 24-hour, family-centered care. Lactation services are provided by our board-certified lactation consultants and supported by our nurses who have extensive breastfeeding training. Mothers at risk for postpartum hypertensive complications are counseled and enrolled in our post-discharge surveillance program, Heart Safe Motherhood. Newborns are evaluated daily by pediatricians or neonatologists, and can be taken to our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) if further evaluation is needed or complications arise. Newborn care procedures include hearing screens, evaluation and management of hyperbilirubinemia, car seat testing, screening for critical congenital heart defects, and metabolic screening. Patient education is central to postpartum care and addresses topics such as newborn care, maternal care, and recognition of early warning signs of possible postpartum complications. Collaboration with Princeton Health’s Community Wellness services is also initiated as needed. Scheduling Requirements Work a minimum of two shifts per four-week schedule or a total of 24 hours per month (night 7 pm-7 am). 12 of these hours must be fulfilled on a weekend shift. Weekends are considered Friday night and Saturday night. Work one holiday per calendar year. Per-diem RNs will be paid at 1.5 times the rate for all hours worked on these holidays. Based on your hired shift, work at least two “difficult to staff” days per calendar year (Easter, Mother’s Day, Halloween, Black Friday, Good Friday, Christmas Eve, Valentine’s Day or New Year’s Eve). Follow departmental call-out policy. Make-up absences within the same schedule period. Failure to comply with this on two occasions in a year will result in withdrawal of the employee from Per Diem status. Key Roles and Responsibilities All nurses and providers are trained in neonatal and obstetrical emergency response. Provide routine care and clinical services such as insertion and care of peripheral IV lines, administration of blood and blood products, urinary catheterization, evaluation for postpartum depression risk factors and support, and pain management. Diagnostic services include bladder scanning, EKGs, ultrasound studies, external fetal monitoring and non-stress tests for antepartum patients, X-rays, and laboratory tests. What We Require for This Role Education Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required or in pursuit. Related Work Experience Greater than 15 months of obstetrical nursing experience required. Licensure, Certification or Registration Requirements Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Active NJ RN license required. National Nursing Certification preferred. Salary Range $49.96-$68.99 per hour.
