Position Overview Under general supervision, provides professional casework services to adult and juvenile offenders and their families; supervises, motivates, and rehabilitates offenders; conducts pre‑sentencing investigations; carries out special assignments; and performs related duties as required. Distinguishing Characteristics Deputy Probation Officer is the entry‑level class in the series. It is distinct from Deputy Probation Officer, Senior, which is the lead worker level and the first‑line shift supervisor within Probation Field Service operations. Ideal Candidate Strong written and verbal communication Reputation for honesty and trustworthiness Excellent command presence Good moral character Credibility Integrity Examples of Duties Conduct investigations, interview offenders, families, and interested individuals, review documents such as police reports and court transcripts, assess environmental, employment, financial, and domestic factors, make sentencing recommendations, and prepare probation plans. Ensure compliance with terms and conditions of probation; coordinate case management with criminal justice and social service agencies; advise and refer to community resources; motivate, monitor, and evaluate progress; make written and oral recommendations to courts. Conduct searches, observe and examine urine samples, administer chemical, skin, and eye/pupil checks, and make arrests as authorized. Carry an assigned caseload; conduct field contacts and home visits; prepare petitions, violations, correspondence, reports, and maintain case files; monitor payment records; conduct civil investigations and juvenile traffic hearings. Train colleagues, extra help employees, and volunteers as needed. Employment Standards Applicants must demonstrate how they meet the employment standards and attach all relevant degrees and/or unofficial transcripts to their application. Possession of a bachelor’s degree with 27 quarter units (or 18 semester units) in sociology, psychology, criminology, or a related field, or 2 years of experience performing duties equivalent to Juvenile Institutions Officer (at least one year at Senior level); or 3) A combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to one of the above. Must meet minimum peace officer standards, possess a valid California Class C Driver License, and be able to travel independently. Additional qualification within one‑year probation: pass BSCC approved Core Training, have First Aid and CPR certificates, and possess required certifications. Knowledge and Ability Standard English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage; college‑level report writing; standard computer applications. Socioeconomic, psychosocial, and cultural influences on behavior; basic math skills. Read and comprehend college‑level material; establish effective relationships; observe and record events; interpret behavior; make referrals; work under pressure; communicate effectively; interview and elicit information; learn and apply laws and procedures; analyze information for decisions.
