TERM

6 month contract with very high likelihood of extension or conversion to full time

SCHEDULE

Monday-Friday 40 hours per week

Every other Friday off, potential weekend work as needed

POSITION OVERVIEW – Lab Tech - Renewable Fuels R&D

This is an R&D laboratory technician position in the Renewable Fuels team in Build for Tomorrow unit under Molecular Conversion department, which is part of the Innovation organization under Client. This position supports experimental research and development work in renewable and hydrocarbon fuels, working under the guidance and supervision of research engineers and chemists. The position is dynamic and requires a variety of laboratory skills depending on the project need. This is a safety sensitive position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Maintain a safe and well-organized laboratory environment complying with Richmond Technology Center safety standards.
2. Operates bench scale units for catalyst or process testing in a variety of reactor types that may be at elevated temperature & pressure (>500F and >1000 psig). Handles sample collection, storage and submission for analysis.
3. Handle potentially toxic substances and a broad variety of renewable and petroleum derived materials.
4. Perform various laboratory activities such as blending, heated filtration, rotavap, sieving, grinding as well as other wet chemistry techniques such as titration.
5. Handle basic maintenance and troubleshooting for test equipment.
6. Conduct catalyst synthesis work under guidance of senior scientists and engineers.
7. Need to lift five-gallon cans in sampling and blending. Handle fifty five-gallon drums with assist of equipment for sampling and blending.
8. Maintains accurate and complete records of work to support processes transfer, scale-up and intellectual property protection.
9. Maintain a high degree of independence, responsibility, reliability, and accountability in planning and conducting experiments. Work effectively under pressure of multiple deadlines.
10. May conduct lab work over weekend and holidays as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. B.S. in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or related field, or equivalent work experience in an industrial research environment
2. Proficient in standard Microsoft Office suite of products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
3. Able to wear respirator for chemical/catalyst handling.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Strong background in laboratory experimental work and basic laboratory skills
• Operation of bench scale unit, as well as maintenance and modification
• Pay attention to details, detect issues, and propose solutions
• Strong mechanical skills repairing and modifying equipment
• Ability to work with complex tasks, complex projects, and multiple tasks at the same time
• Strong verbal and written communications skills
• Proven experience working within a team environment and drawing on knowledge and skills of others.
