POLICE OFFICER (LATERAL) (CLASS CODE 7110)

Responsibilities Patrol assigned areas to deter and detect criminal activity, respond promptly to calls for service (including emergencies), and conduct investigations. Gather evidence, prepare reports on incidents, and document findings accurately. Enforce federal, state, and municipal laws and ordinances, including traffic regulations. Engage with community members to promote safety, address concerns, and participate in outreach programs and events. Collaborate with other officers and emergency service personnel; respond to call‑to‑duty emergencies and perform overtime as needed. Complete assigned shift platforms (night, evening, weekend, holiday, or special events) in a rotating or fixed schedule at the discretion of the Superintendent of Police. Qualifications / Minimum Requirements Current P.O.S.T. certification or an equivalent state board certification; candidates without Louisiana P.O.S.T. Level 1 must complete a full academy. At least one year of patrol and/or investigative law‑enforcement experience after completing a police academy and field training. Minimum age 20. Valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Good physical and psychological condition to perform essential job functions. State‑approved G.E.D., high‑school diploma, or an equivalent. College diplomas from accredited institutions are accepted when issued by a recognized U.S. Department of Education accreditors. Automatic Disqualifiers Conviction, plea of guilty, or nolo contendere to any felony. Conviction, plea of guilty, or nolo contendere to any misdemeanor involving crimes against the person or sexual offenses. Conviction, plea of guilty, or nolo contendere to violations of civil rights as defined by the U.S. Constitution or Louisiana law. Use of prescription medication in an unapproved manner within two years prior to application. Use of any illegal drug (except marijuana) within five years prior to application. Involvement in manufacturing, distribution, or transportation of illegal drugs. Dishonorably discharged or arrested for a felony or disqualifying misdemeanor under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Termination or resignation from any law‑enforcement agency for disciplinary reasons or receipt of a disability retirement. Pay & Benefits Additional annual supplemental pay of $7,200 after one year of qualified service; City longevity pay after one year of service; educational incentive pay of $1,000 (Associate’s), $2,000 (Bachelor’s), or $3,000 (Graduate) per year. Part‑Time Officers Work approximately 42.75 hours in a two‑week pay cycle; incentive pays pro‑rated based on hours.
