Faculty/Type Title Assistant Professor - Psychology Begins Fall 2027 About the College Spelman College seeks teacher/scholars dedicated to excellence in teaching and to the continued enhancement of the academic environment for students and colleagues. Founded in 1881, Spelman College is a private four-year liberal arts college located in Atlanta, GA. The oldest historically Black college for women in the United States, Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium and Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education. Position Description The mission of the Spelman College Department of Psychology is to prepare students for the service and study of Psychology. We seek to empower women to lead and effect positive change in the world by instructing our students in the ethical, systematic study of behavior and mental processes, and in the application of Psychology to community and global issues, with the expectation of intellectual engagement and academic excellence. The Department has 16 full-time faculty members (11 tenure-track/tenured). Collectively, the Psychology Department faculty have expertise in approximately nine Psychology subfields, ranging from Clinical Psychology to Quantitative Psychology. The Department of Psychology at Spelman College is seeking to fill a position at the rank of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of August 2027 . Faculty should be teacher-scholars who are dedicated to excellence in teaching, desire to pursue meaningful engagement in service to Spelman College, the profession, and the broader community, and an active research program. All candidates are expected to have a demonstrated interest in a liberal arts education at a women’s historically Black college, be able to contribute effectively to undergraduate teaching, advising, and mentoring, assist in curriculum development and assessment, provide service to the department and College, as well as be active in scholarly, creative, and/or research productivity appropriate to a liberal arts environment. The successful candidate should have demonstrated scholarly productivity with the potential to secure external funding and to engage undergraduates in their scholarship, research, or creative pursuits. We are seeking someone with a Ph.D. in Social Psychology or closely related fields. The ideal candidate will be expected to teach social psychology, race and gender psychology courses (e.g., Psychology of the African American Experience, Psychology of Women, and/or Psychology of Racism), research-based courses (e.g., Research Methods, Research Seminar, and Honors Thesis Seminar), and other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. The specific area of expertise within social psychology is open. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research complements the Department’s strengths and curricular needs and integrates an intersectional lens in exploring culture, race and ethnicity, gender, intergroup relations, prejudice and discrimination, health and well-being, social justice, and social change. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in hand or have fulfilled all requirements for the degree by the start of the appointment.
