Extra-Curricular Band Assistant Director - AHS Alleghany County Public Schools / Alleghany High School – Covington, Virginia Job Details Job ID: 5725630 Application Deadline: Posted until filled Posted: May 19, 2026 4:00 AM (UTC) Starting date: Immediately Job Description Title: Coach/Extra-Curricular Activity Sponsor Primary Function: To provide instruction and leadership in the extracurricular program that will enhance student success individually or as a team through competition. Qualifications Alleghany Highlands Public Schools employee (preferred). Physical strength, dexterity, ability, and desire to complete required duties. Knowledge of extracurricular activity (experience preferred). Any other requirements specified by Virginia High School League. Reports To: Principal (or designee) and Activities Director Performance Responsibilities Professional and Interpersonal Relations Communicates with educational personnel, parents, students, and others. Cooperates with school administration. Develops positive rapport with all coaching staff within the school system. Organizes coaching staff. Develops positive relationships with students, faculty, parents, community, game officials, news media, and opponents. Employs appropriate conduct during practice. Attends Virginia High School League rules clinics. Motivates staff and players toward desired goals. Commands respect by example in appearance, manners, behavior, language. Adheres to established laws, policies, rules, and regulations. Presents himself/herself as a positive role model for staff, students, and parents. Coaching and Related Areas Organizes strategies for teaching sports skills and sports management systems. Develops high caliber and quality instruction. Teaches fundamental skills. Cares for equipment and uniforms. Inventories all equipment. Disciplines team appropriately. Designs quality organization of practice sessions. Designs managers and other support personnel. Designs preseason planning. Holds a pre-practice meeting with all assistant coaches. Treats all assistant coaches with fairness and respect. Utilizes individual strengths of assistant coaches and provides opportunities for promotional growth. Evaluates assistants fairly using a written format to discuss individual strengths and weaknesses to foster positive growth and performance. Supervises managers and other support personnel. Manages budget. Follows purchasing procedures. Follows league, conference, and Virginia High School League policies. Devotes time and energy to coaching duties. Follows end‑of‑season procedures. Performs other job‑related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the activities director and/or principal. Terms of Employment: As determined by Alleghany Highlands Public Schools supplemental assignment schedule. Evaluation: Written evaluation form specific to duties.
